Honda Brings Back The Prelude After More Than 25 Years
The 2026 Honda Prelude eHEV Australian Version marks the return of a nameplate that quietly disappeared more than two decades ago. And interestingly, Honda has not tried to turn it into a nostalgic retro exercise.
Instead, the company has rebuilt the Prelude around electrified performance and modern chassis engineering while still preserving the low, sporty coupe proportions that made earlier generations memorable.
Honda Australia confirmed the new Prelude during the Melbourne Motor Show, announcing a single high-spec grade priced at $65,000 driveaway under the brand’s One Price Promise program. Orders are already open through Honda dealerships and the company’s online platform.
For longtime Honda enthusiasts, the bigger story is simply seeing the Prelude badge return at all.
The Coupe Shape Still Feels Distinctively Prelude
From the official images, the new Prelude adopts a much cleaner and more mature design approach than many modern sporty coupes.
The front end sits low and wide with slim headlights stretching into a relatively simple fascia. There is very little visual clutter. The roofline flows smoothly into the rear deck without the exaggerated creases or oversized vents that dominate some newer performance-oriented designs.
It looks aerodynamic without trying too hard to announce itself.
Honda says the styling was inspired by aerodynamic efficiency, and the proportions support that claim. The car appears compact but planted, with short overhangs and a low seating position giving it a more focused stance than a conventional hybrid hatchback or sedan.
Black alloy wheels and dark trim elements also help reduce visual weight around the body.
Hybrid Technology Meets Type R Hardware
Underneath the sleek bodywork sits one of the more interesting combinations Honda has attempted in recent years.
The Prelude uses Honda’s e:HEV hybrid powertrain paired with what the company describes as a performance-focused chassis derived from the Civic Type R. While Honda has not released full performance specifications yet, the setup clearly suggests the company wants this car to feel engaging rather than purely efficiency-focused. [Inference]
More notable is the debut of Honda’s new S+ Shift technology.
According to Honda, the system simulates the sensation of quick gear changes by adjusting throttle response, engine sound, rev matching, and braking feel to mimic traditional performance driving characteristics. Drivers can activate the feature at the push of a button.
It is an unusual idea for a hybrid coupe, though perhaps necessary at a time when many electrified cars risk feeling mechanically distant.
A Sports Coupe Positioned Between Nostalgia And Electrification
The Prelude returns to a market that looks very different from the one it left behind in the early 2000s.
Traditional coupes have become increasingly rare, especially affordable Japanese models with recognizable enthusiast heritage. Honda seems aware of that. The company is positioning the Prelude as both an emotional revival and a practical hybrid performance car for modern buyers.
Included ownership benefits in Australia also reflect that broader usability focus, with a five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, five years of roadside assistance, and low-price servicing.
The result feels less like a pure nostalgia project and more like Honda testing whether enthusiasm still has a place in the hybrid era.
