2026 Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America 2.0

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Special edition honors American motorsport ingenuity and Craig Breedlove’s land speed legacy.

  • New asymmetrical red, white, and blue livery reinterprets the Mustang tri-bar design.

  • Supercharged 5.2-liter V8 continues producing 815 horsepower with a 202 mph top speed.

Ford Gives The Mustang GTD A Patriotic Identity

The Ford Mustang GTD already sits in a strange place within the Mustang lineup. It is technically still a Mustang, but one engineered with the mindset of a European track weapon rather than a traditional American muscle car.

Now Ford is adding another layer to that identity.

The new 2026 Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America 2.0 arrives as a special appearance-focused edition timed around America’s upcoming 250th birthday celebration. The name itself references Craig Breedlove, the aerospace technician and land speed record holder who became the first person to break the 600-mph barrier using a jet-powered machine built largely through American ingenuity and persistence.

That same philosophy is what Ford says inspired the Mustang GTD program from the beginning.

And honestly, the connection makes sense.

The GTD was never designed as a nostalgia exercise. It exists because Ford wanted to build something capable of fighting European supercars on their own territory. The Nürburgring lap time alone proved that much.

New Livery Changes The Character Completely

Mechanically, nothing changes here. Visually though, the Spirit of America 2.0 feels noticeably different from the standard GTD.

The exterior uses an asymmetrical livery applied over a Performance White body finish. Race Red and Lightning Blue stripes stretch across the body in an offset pattern that reinterprets the classic Mustang tri-bar motif in a more aggressive and modern way.

From some angles, the graphics almost make the car look like a factory endurance racer rather than a road-legal Mustang.

The exposed carbon-fibre sections remain intentionally visible throughout the bodywork, especially around the front splitter, side surfaces, and enormous rear wing. Ford clearly wanted the carbon structure itself to stay part of the visual identity rather than hiding it beneath paint.

Forgeline wheels are also included as standard equipment.

The overall effect works surprisingly well because the GTD’s proportions already lean heavily toward motorsport design. Long hood, low roofline, wide rear track. The patriotic graphics simply exaggerate those details further.

The 815 HP Supercharged V8 Carries Over

Underneath the new exterior treatment, the Mustang GTD Spirit of America 2.0 remains mechanically identical to the existing GTD.

That means power still comes from Ford’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 815 horsepower. Ford also confirms the car retains its 202 mph top speed, keeping it as the fastest and most powerful road-legal Mustang the company has ever assembled.

The standard Performance Package remains included as well.

Inside, the driver-focused cockpit also carries over unchanged, though buyers can still specify available 3D-printed titanium accents throughout the interior. Ford says the ergonomics remain centered around track use and high-performance driving rather than grand touring comfort.

That approach fits the GTD’s personality. This was never intended to be a relaxed cruiser.

More Symbolic Than Mechanical

What makes the Spirit of America 2.0 interesting is that Ford resists overcomplicating it.

There are no added power figures, no larger wings, and no attempt to reinvent the GTD formula entirely. Instead, the car acts more like a rolling tribute to American performance ambition and motorsport culture.

Ford says the application window for North American customers remains open through May 18.
