BYD Shark Brings Plug In Hybrid Power to UK Pickups
The 2026 BYD Shark enters the UK pickup market with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, five-seat double cab and all-wheel drive. Its DMO system combines a turbocharged petrol engine with electric drive at both axles, producing 436 PS and 650 Nm.
Unlike a conventional diesel pickup, the Shark can cover shorter journeys without using its petrol engine. BYD quotes up to 55 miles of WLTP electric range and 419 miles with a full battery and fuel tank.
Wide Front Lighting and Full Width Rear Lightbar
BYD says the Shark's styling draws on the animal behind its name. Headlights sit far apart near the bonnet edge, connected visually by a horizontal section above a large grille.
At the back, a lightbar stretches across the tailgate, with lamps at the outer edges and prominent BYD lettering. The double-cab profile has side steps, dark lower cladding and pronounced wheel openings.
Standard 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels wear substantial tyres. Five exterior colours are listed, including Polar White, Atlantis Blue and Sunrise Orange.
Double Cab Measures Nearly 5.5 Metres Long
The Shark measures 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide and 1,925 mm tall. Its 3,260 mm wheelbase leaves room for five passengers and a separate load bed.
Ground clearance is 230 mm unladen, reducing to 210 mm fully loaded. Approach and departure angles are 31 and 19.3 degrees respectively.
Double-wishbone suspension is used at both ends, while selectable all-wheel-drive settings cover sand, mud, snow and gravel.
Twin Screens and a Flat Rear Floor
Inside, the dashboard combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen. A head-up display, physical buttons and a column-mounted gear selector are also fitted.
Heated and ventilated front seats, vegan-leather upholstery and a 12-speaker Dynaudio system come standard.
The rear bench sits above a flat floor, with almost 90 cm of legroom and a 27-degree seatback angle. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a 360-degree camera are included.
Plug In Hybrid Produces 436 PS
The DMO powertrain pairs a 150 PS 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 231 PS front motor and 204 PS rear motor. System output is 436 PS, allowing 0–62 mph in 5.7 seconds.
A 32.2 kWh Blade Battery supports up to 55 miles of electric driving. DC charging at up to 55 kW takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in 21 minutes.
Load Bed, Towing and UK Pricing
The 1,200-litre load bed accompanies a 790 kg payload limit and 2,500 kg braked towing capacity. Two sockets enable vehicle-to-load power for external equipment, with the technical sheet listing 6 kW.
Safety equipment includes seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection and emergency lane-keeping assistance. The Shark has also received a five-star Euro NCAP rating, with an 86 percent child-occupant protection score.
The Shark is offered in one UK trim, priced from £47,295 including VAT in the press kit's pricing section. Its opening summary instead quotes £47,290, leaving a five-pound discrepancy [Unverified].
The model enters a pickup sector still associated with diesel power, but offers electric-only running without giving up a separate cargo bed.
