2025 Volvo XC90 South African Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • 2025 Volvo XC90 South African Version offered in B5 mild-hybrid and T8 plug-in hybrid trims.

  • Updated design, new infotainment, and added cabin refinement.

  • Pricing starts from R1,555,500, with full warranty and service coverage.

Familiar Sophistication, Now Sharper

The 2025 Volvo XC90 South African Version isn’t a radical rethink — and that’s a good thing. It’s more of a quiet evolution, tightening what was already one of the most composed seven-seaters on the road. Cleaner surfacing, calmer detailing, and subtle refinements give this updated XC90 a more mature posture. The shape remains elegant and instantly recognizable, but with just enough polish to keep it relevant in 2025’s luxury SUV crowd.

Inside, the focus is on serenity. The cabin has been simplified and softened, with new inlays made from recycled materials and horizontal dashboard lines that create a greater sense of width. The redesigned centre console offers better storage and a repositioned wireless charger — small but meaningful touches that make daily life smoother

Two Flavours of Electrification

Volvo Car South Africa is offering two distinct electrified powertrains: the B5 mild-hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The B5 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 48-volt system for improved efficiency, delivering 183 kW and 350 Nm while averaging just 8.1 L/100 km

The T8 plug-in hybrid ups the ante, pairing electric and petrol power for a combined 340 kW and 709 Nm, hitting 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. More importantly, it now offers over 70 km of electric range — enough to cover most daily drives without a drop of fuel

For longer trips, total range exceeds 800 km, with power distributed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission

Comfort Remains the Core

Ride comfort has always been central to the XC90’s charm, and this update reinforces that. The air suspension system can lower itself for easier entry or improved efficiency, or lift by 40 mm for tougher terrain. Adaptive dampers continuously monitor and adjust to road conditions, giving the XC90 a composed, almost effortless feel on uneven surfaces

Inside, the space remains flexible — 301 litres of storage with all seats up, expanding to 1,950 litres with the second and third rows folded flat

A Bowers & Wilkins audio system headlines the Ultra trim, while a Harman Kardon setup comes standard on Plus models.

Safety, Still Synonymous with Volvo

As ever, the XC90 is built around safety. The updated model carries every acronym in Volvo’s playbook — Pilot Assist, BLIS, Adaptive Cruise Control, 360° camera, and a reinforced safety cage that’s earned its reputation the hard way

Pricing begins at R1,555,500 for the B5 Plus and peaks at R1,936,500 for the T8 Ultra. Each comes with a five-year/100,000 km warranty and service plan, plus eight years of battery coverage for the plug-in hybrid

In an era chasing full electrification, the 2025 Volvo XC90 South African Version feels refreshingly grounded — a luxury SUV that’s practical, efficient, and still unmistakably Volvo.
