2025 Volvo XC90 Black Edition
By Lorenzo Bianchi October 1, 2025
Darkened exterior details and unique wheels give the XC90 a sharper presence.
Interior gains darker finishes, high-grade trim, and Volvo’s updated Google-based infotainment.
Available with both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, depending on market.
A darker spin on Volvo’s big SUV
The XC90 has been Volvo’s halo SUV for nearly a decade. Big, upright, and unmistakably Scandinavian in its design, it’s also been a safe choice — in every sense of the word. For 2025, Volvo adds something a little moodier: the Black Edition, a trim that dials down the chrome and dials up the attitude.
This isn’t a new model. Think of it as a sharper outfit for a familiar figure. One that trades subtle brightwork for gloss-black detailing across the grille, badges, and window surrounds.
Exterior: presence over flash
Volvo hasn’t changed the bones of the XC90. Same tall bonnet, same square shoulders. What’s different is the way your eye reads it now. Without the chrome, the SUV looks lower, wider, more grounded. The gloss-black grille is the centerpiece, flanked by Volvo’s thin LED “Thor’s Hammer” headlights.
The wheels are unique to the Black Edition — finished in darker tones that complement the trim. It’s not loud, but the effect is striking, especially against the deep black paint that comes standard.
Interior: darker tones, same Scandinavian restraint
Step inside and the theme continues. Upholstery is finished in darker shades of leather, with the option of tailored wool blends for those who want something softer to the touch. Trim choices include gloss black or open-pore wood. Metal accents have been toned down, but they’re still there — just quieter, less obvious.
Volvo’s infotainment is the latest Google-based system, running on a vertical touchscreen in the center stack. Maps, Assistant, and Play Store are all built in. Ahead of the driver, a 12.3-inch digital display is standard, with a head-up display available further up the range. It’s all very familiar to Volvo owners, just wrapped in a cabin that feels more cocooned.
Powertrains: familiar choices
No surprises here. The Black Edition is about style, not mechanical change. Buyers still choose between the B6 mild-hybrid petrol and the Recharge plug-in hybrid.
- The B6 pairs a turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder with a 48-volt system, smoothing out city driving and improving efficiency.
- The Recharge plug-in hybrid combines the four-cylinder with an electric motor, giving enough EV range for short commutes.
Performance figures match the standard XC90 lineup. Which means solid, not sporty — but that’s never been the point of this SUV.
Comfort and ride
On the road, the XC90 remains tuned for comfort first. Air suspension is available on higher trims, softening the ride further and offering adjustable height when needed. Inside, seven seats are standard. The second row is roomy, while the third is serviceable for children or shorter adults. Cargo space remains one of the XC90’s strong suits.
Safety and tech
Volvo has never cut corners on safety, and the Black Edition carries over the brand’s IntelliSafe suite. Adaptive cruise, Pilot Assist lane-centering, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, and cross-traffic alert are all present.
Over-the-air updates keep the software fresh. Wireless charging, USB-C ports, and premium audio systems — Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins depending on spec — round out the tech list.
