A Larger Smart Steps Forward
The 2025 Smart No.5 Premium arrives as the brand’s third all-electric model, unveiled globally in Byron Bay, Australia, and marks Smart’s move into the premium mid-size SUV class. It sits above the No.1 and No.3 in both footprint and ambition, signaling a broader brief than the city-focused Smart of old. The No. 5 is positioned to compete in markets where perceived quality, space, and range are just as important as efficiency.
External Proportions and Design
The Mercedes-Benz No. 5 has a planted profile, short overhangs, and a tidy, assured stance. Oblong headlamps and dual-colored mirrors add visual identity without going overboard, while the panoramic halo roof and frameless doors provide a light, architectural feel.Floating wheel caps with central Smart logos underline the brand’s design continuity. Overall proportions suggest a vehicle intended for global markets rather than niche urban use.
Cabin Layout and Technology
Inside, the No.5 Premium emphasizes comfort and digital depth. A spacious rear seating arrangement and "zero-gravity" front leather seats create a laid-back atmosphere that is reinforced by ambient lighting and ample storage. A 10.3-inch instrument cluster, two 13-inch AMOLED screens, and a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display are the focal points of the cockpit. A generative AI voice assistant and Smart’s animated avatars manage core functions, powered by an AMD V2000 chip designed for quick responses and smooth operation.
Electric Platform and Driving Focus
Beneath the bodywork sits an 800-volt electrical architecture, a notable step for the brand. The 100 kWh battery supports rapid charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 15 minutes under suitable conditions, and Smart quotes a range of more than 740 km on the CLTC cycle. Multiple driving modes — including Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock — point to a broader usage envelope than typical urban EVs.
Market Context and Positioning
Smart is obviously aiming the No. 5 Premium at consumers who are thinking about purchasing compact and mid-size electric SUVs from well-known international brands. Collaborations with outdoor companies like Trek and HEIMPLANET, as well as partnerships with Sennheiser for the Signature Sound System, support an upscale, lifestyle-focused narrative.Within Smart’s range, the No.5 stands as the brand’s most ambitious EV yet, aimed at customers who want premium features without moving into full-size territory.
