A familiar SUV with a sharper edge

The Nissan X-Trail has long been a staple in Japan, one of those family SUVs that manages to cover the school run, a weekend trip to the mountains, and everything in between. Now Autech, Nissan’s in-house customization arm, has taken it one step further with the new X-Trail Autech Sports Spec.

Unlike the louder, racetrack-inspired Nismo projects, Autech cars are about polish and exclusivity. The Sports Spec leans into that philosophy but adds a little more bite, both in the way it looks and the way it drives.

Design cues that stand out without shouting

Visually, the Sports Spec isn’t a complete overhaul, but the changes are well-judged. Chrome detailing on the grille and bumpers gets a darker treatment, lending the SUV a meaner face. New alloy wheels — two-tone with a machined finish — are fitted, and they fill the arches just enough to give the X-Trail a more planted stance.

Ride height is fractionally lower, which helps the proportions, while subtle bodywork touches and Autech badging on the fenders and tailgate signal its special status. It’s the sort of detail work aimed at buyers who don’t want flash, but do want something distinct from the neighbor’s X-Trail.

Step inside and the Sports Spec makes its intentions clear. The cabin adopts a darker color palette, with leather and suede seats stitched through with Autech’s trademark blue thread. The effect is sporty without being harsh, and the seats themselves get extra bolstering for better support.

Other details — from ambient lighting to the steering wheel finish — have been tailored to fit the Sports Spec’s positioning. The dual 12.3-inch screens carry over, as does Nissan’s latest infotainment suite, complete with wireless smartphone integration and a full spread of connected services.

Powertrain and handling tweaks

Under the skin, the Sports Spec runs Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system, where a 1.5-litre VC-Turbo three-cylinder acts solely as a generator for the electric drive motors. Buyers can opt for front-wheel drive or the dual-motor e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system.

Output remains the same as standard models — 201 hp (150 kW) in two-wheel-drive form and 211 hp (157 kW) with e-4ORCE. The difference here lies in how it feels. Autech has stiffened the suspension just enough to sharpen steering response and high-speed stability, but without pushing it into uncomfortable territory. It’s a more composed X-Trail, not a transformed one.
