2025 Kia Tasman SX 4X4

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Four-wheel drive joins the 2.2 L turbo-diesel (154 kW/440 Nm) and 8-speed automatic in the SX grade, offering 3 500 kg towing and 1 000 kg payload.

  • SX specification adds 17″ alloy wheels, tub liner, dual 12.3″ screens, wireless charging, and rear-view camera over the entry S grade.

  • Pricing is estimated from AUD 49,990 drive-away, positioning the SX 4X4 as Kia’s mid-range dual-cab pickup alternative to Ranger XL Plus and Hilux SR.

Four-Wheel-Drive Powertrain and Towing Capability

The Tasman SX 4X4 shares its 2.2 L Smartstream CRDi turbo-diesel, rated at 154 kW and 440 Nm, with the rest of the series. Drive is delivered through an 8-speed A8TR1 automatic, now engaging front and rear axles via an electronic transfer case. Braked towing sits at 3 500 kg with a 350 kg tow-ball mass, while payload remains just above 1 000 kg. Combined-cycle fuel consumption is around 7.6 L/100 km—competitive for mid-sized diesels.

Exterior Enhancements and Dimensions

Visually, Tasman SX adds 17-inch alloy wheels replacing the S grade’s steel rims. Body dimensions match the dual-cab footprint at 5 410 mm long, 1 930 mm wide, and 1 870 mm tall, on a 3 270 mm wheelbase. The Tasman SX grade retains the ladder-frame chassis, double-wishbone front and leaf-spring rear suspension, now optimised for extra grip with the 4X4 system. Standard ground clearance remains 220 mm, with approach/departure angles of 29°/21° respectively.

Load Bed Utility and Accessories

The cargo tub dimensions—1 512 × 1 572 × 540 mm—provide 1 173 L of cargo volume. Tasman SX now includes a durable bed liner and six tie-down cleats as standard. Integrated trailer-brake controller and a tub light support after-dark loading. Optional accessories via Kia Genuine Accessories include tonneau covers, ladder racks, and side steps for easier bed access.

Interior Technology and Comfort

Moving inside, Tasman SX upgrades the S specification with twin 12.3″ displays—a digital instrument cluster and the infotainment screen—separated by a slim 5″ climate control panel. Standard features include wireless phone charging, rear-view camera, and six-speaker audio with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Cruise control, drive-mode selector, and heated front seats enhance daily usability. A 33 L under-seat storage compartment provides secure stowage.

Safety and Driver Assistance

All Kia Tasman SX 4X4 models carry the full suite of Kia ADAS: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane-Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Detection, Rear-Cross-Traffic Alert, and Driver Attention Warning. Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, and Hill-Start/Hill-Descent Assist come standard. The Tasman SX grade also gains rear parking sensors to complement the rear-view camera. Kia’s 5-star ANCAP rating for the 4X4 dual-cab underpins its safety credentials.

On-Road Dynamics and Off-Road Competence

On tarmac, the Tasman SX 4X4 offers a composed ride courtesy of its tuned suspension and weight-distributing AWD. Steering is light but accurate, helping in tight urban driving. Off-road, the 4X4 system includes X-Trek Modes for Sand, Mud, and Rock, and an Electronic Locking Differential on demand. Reviewers at off-road previews noted confident traction in uneven terrain and water crossings up to 800 mm deep.

Market Position and Pricing

With an estimated AUD 49,990 drive-away starting price, the Tasman SX 4X4 slots between the S 4X2 (AUD 42,990 drive-away) and the SX+ dual-cab diesel. It competes with Ford Ranger XL Plus 4X4 (~AUD 52k), Toyota HiLux Workmate 4X4 (~AUD 54k) and Isuzu D-Max LS-M (~AUD 50k). Kia’s 7-year unlimited-km warranty and capped-price servicing sweeten the proposition.
