2025 Kia Tasman S 4X2

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The Tasman S 4X2 is the entry dual‑cab crew‑pickup variant, priced from AUD 42,990 drive‑away, targeting budget-minded buying.

  • Powered by a 2.2 L turbo‑diesel engine producing 154 kW and 440 Nm, paired with 8-speed automatic, towing up to 3,500 kg.

  • Offers solid utility with 1 000 kg payload, 1,173 L bed volume, and core features like cruise control, rear‑view camera, and Kia’s 7‑year warranty.

Kia’s First Ute Enters Entry Segment

Kia Australia developed the Tasman with significant local input. The base S 4X2 dual‑cab pickup sets the entry price at AUD 42,990 drive‑away—undercutting competitors like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux at the base end. Orders opened in April 2025, with deliveries commencing from July. Cab-chassis single-cab variants start at AUD 38,010 pre on-road costs.

Powertrain Consistency and Capability

The Tasman S 4X2 shares the same 2.2‑litre CRDi turbodiesel engine as the rest of the Tasman range, delivering 154 kW and 440 Nm, routed through an 8‑speed automatic transmission. These figures support a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload over 1,000 kg. Estimated fuel economy is around 7.6 L/100 km.

Exterior and Dimensions of the S Variant

Built on a body-on-frame chassis, the Tasman measures 5,410 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,870–1,920 mm tall, riding on a 3,270 mm wheelbase. Despite its crew-cab configuration, the S grade avoids 4X4 hardware, offering rear‑wheel drive only. Standard wheels are 17-inch steel units.

Cargo Bed and Utility

The Tasman S dual‑cab pickup offers significant utility. Its load tub measures 1,512 × 1,572 × 540 mm, equating to approximately 1,173 L of volume, enough to accommodate standard Australian pallets. Payload is rated at roughly 1,013 kg. Towing tech includes an integrated trailer brake controller.

Interior Layout and Key Equipment

Inside, the Tasman S 4X2 includes a twin 12.3″ display setup—digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen—mounted over a simple 5″ HVAC display. Features like smart cruise control, rear-view camera, and drive mode selection are standard. Audio system comprises six speakers with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto support.

Safety and Warranty Coverage

Kia has equipped every Tasman variant with advanced safety systems. The S 4X2 includes forward collision alert, lane-keep assist, driver attention warning and vehicle stability control. The vehicle holds a 5‑star ANCAP safety rating in its 4X4 variants—a strong indication of overall structure integrity. Kia backs the Tasman with a 7‑year unlimited kilometre warranty and capped-price servicing.

Driving Experience at Entry Level

On-road testing describes the S 4X2 as smooth and composed, offering refined ride quality and precise steering—attributes uncommon in entry-grade utes. While climbing hills under load feels limited, performance remains acceptable considering torque output. Comfort and control remain favourable across varied terrain.

Market Position at Base Price

The S 4X2 crew-cab pickup provides a strong value proposition. With a starting price under AUD 43,000 drive‑away, it competes effectively with base models like Ranger XL and HiLux Workmate, sometimes offering more features and a longer warranty. Though it lacks 4WD, for buyers needing a capable rear-drive ute on a budget it offers a compelling local alternative.
