2025 Audi A5 L Sportback B10 Chinese Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Long-wheelbase A5 Sportback keeps the fastback silhouette intact.

  • EA888 Evo5 with dual 48V mild-hybrid systems underpins efficiency and response.

  • First SAIC Audi model on the PPC platform with advanced driver assistance.

Exterior Design and Proportions

Seen in the metal, the 2025 Audi A5 L Sportback reads as a careful extension rather than a redesign. The familiar fastback profile remains the car’s anchor, with the roofline tapering cleanly from the C-pillar and avoiding the visual heaviness that can come with lengthened sedans. At 4,903 mm long with a 2,922 mm wheelbase, the “L” adds presence without distorting the stance. The increase—74 mm overall and 22 mm between the axles versus the standard A5—is restrained, and it shows.

Up front, SAIC Audi has given the A5 L a more assertive face. The grille is larger, the lower intakes more pronounced, and the overall impression edges closer to Audi’s RS visual language without crossing into theatrics. Slim headlights are linked by a continuous light strip, framing an illuminated four-ring logo. Digital LED daytime running lights add configurable signatures, a detail that signals where Audi’s design priorities now sit.

In profile, frameless doors reinforce the coupe-like identity. At the rear, a full-width taillight bar with second-generation OLED technology introduces personalised light signatures. Trim treatments vary by version, with blacked-out or body-coloured details altering the car’s character without changing its fundamentals

Powertrain and Chassis Tuning

Under the bonnet sits Audi’s EA888 Evo5 turbocharged petrol engine, rated at 150 kW. Rather than a single electrification layer, the A5 L uses two 48-volt systems. A starter-generator handles start-stop and accessory loads, while a PTG motor integrated into the transmission provides up to 18 kW of assistance and enables kinetic energy recovery of up to 25 kW.

On paper, this is not about outright performance. In use, the setup is intended to smooth throttle response, sharpen low-speed transitions, and improve efficiency. Chassis tuning was carried out by German engineers, with the stated aim of preserving the A5’s established driving character despite the longer wheelbase.

Interior Layout and Technology

Inside, the A5 L Sportback follows Audi’s current digital-first layout. A large, screen-led dashboard is created by placing a separate passenger display next to the driver instrument panel and central touchscreen. The architecture avoids excessive layering and stays horizontal and clear.

The First Edition specification shown adopts a sport-leaning theme, with a predominantly black interior offset by red stitching and red seatbelts, echoing Audi’s RS visual cues. The longer wheelbase translates into improved rear legroom, though the cabin retains a snug, driver-focused feel rather than becoming lounge-like.

Platform Strategy and Market Positioning

Crucially, the A5 L Sportback is the first SAIC Audi product built on the new PPC platform. Replacing MLB Evo for combustion models, PPC brings higher data bandwidth and deeper integration of electrification and driver assistance systems. SAIC Audi’s collaboration with Huawei enables an advanced intelligent driving suite using lidar, cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors.

Positioned against rivals such as the BMW 3 Series L and Mercedes-Benz C-Class L, the A5 L Sportback takes a different angle. Its fastback body and restrained wheelbase stretch prioritise design continuity as much as rear-seat comfort. For buyers seeking something more expressive than a conventional long-wheelbase sedan, Audi’s approach feels deliberate rather than experimental.
