Design and Proportions Set by the Fastback Silhouette
At first glance, the 2025 Audi A5 L Sportback First Edition looks familiar, and that is intentional. Designed under the direction of Jakob Hirzel, the car stays close to the global A5 Sportback while subtly adapting to local expectations. The fastback roofline remains intact, flowing cleanly from the C-pillar, and the added length is visually well-managed rather than exaggerated.
The front end is where the differences appear. The bumper design is more aggressive than the overseas A5, with a larger grille and pronounced lower intakes that push the look closer to an RS-style aesthetic. Slim headlights are connected by a continuous light strip, framing an illuminated four-ring Audi logo. Digital LED daytime running lights can display multiple light signatures, adding a distinctly modern edge.
In profile, the “L” designation becomes clearer. Measuring 4,903 mm in length with a 2,922 mm wheelbase, the A5 L gains 74 mm overall and 22 mm between the axles compared with the standard model. The extension is measured rather than excessive, preserving the car’s original balance. Frameless doors remain, reinforcing the Sportback’s coupe-like identity
Powertrain and Chassis Development
Under the bonnet sits Audi’s familiar EA888 Evo5 turbocharged engine, producing a maximum output of 150 kW. What distinguishes this application is the electrification strategy. Two 48-volt systems are used in the A5 L Sportback: a PTG motor built into the transmission and a starter-generator that manages engine start-stop and auxiliary functions.
The latter provides up to 18 kW of assistance and supports kinetic energy recovery at up to 25 kW. In practice, this setup is aimed less at outright performance and more at smoothing response and improving efficiency. Chassis tuning was carried out by German engineers, with the stated goal of retaining the driving character associated with the A5 despite its increased size.
Prioritize interior design and technology.
The A5 L Sportback's interior combines a greater focus on digital interfaces with the well-known Audi architecture.
The central screen and driver cluster are joined by a separate passenger-side display to form a multi-layered dashboard with lots of screens. The design avoids superfluous visual clutter by staying horizontal and structured.
The First Edition shown adopts a sport-oriented colour scheme, with a black interior accented by red stitching and red seatbelts, clearly echoing Audi’s RS visual language. Materials and finishes appear consistent with Audi’s recent premium offerings, while rear-seat accommodation benefits from the longer wheelbase.
Platform Strategy and Market Positioning
The A5 L Sportback is the first SAIC Audi model built on the new PPC platform, replacing MLB Evo for combustion-based vehicles. In addition to supporting more sophisticated electrical and driver aid technologies, this architecture speeds up data processing. Notably, SAIC Audi and Huawei have collaborated to incorporate a full array of intelligent driving technologies, such as lidar, cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors.
The A5 L Sportback First Edition is positioned between performance-focused coupes and mainstream premium sedans, catering to consumers looking for rear-seat comfort together with design-led appeal. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class L and the BMW 3 Series long-wheelbase are obvious competitors, but Audi's fastback body sets it apart in this market.
