Hyundai Recalls Over 135,000 Santa Fe SUVs in the U.S. Over Fire Risk Linked to Starter Motor Issue

More than 135,000 Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicles recalled in the United States due to risk of potential starter motor fire.

Electrical Defect Triggers Major Recall
Hyundai Motor America has ordered a recall involving about 135,386 Santa Fe sport utility vehicles in the U.S. after finding a possible electrical short that can result in an engine compartment fire. The problem relates to the installation of a starter motor cover, which could leave electrical terminals exposed and enhance the likelihood of a short circuit due to a crash or its aftermath.
As per the recall document submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the flaw can cause an electrical short even if the vehicle is parked and turned off. Due to that, Hyundai has instructed owners to park their cars outside and away from buildings until the repairs are carried out.
Models and Production Period Affected
The recall applies to certain 2024 and 2025 model year Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs manufactured between December 2023 and July 2025. The vehicles potentially were equipped with a starter motor assembly whose protective B+ terminal cover was not correctly installed at the factory.
Even though Hyundai has not seen any accidents or injuries regarding this problem, Hyundai had begun the recall following detection of several instances where starter motor parts may become exposed after being impacted or subjected to severe vibration. The quality control department of the automaker determined that the problem resulted from a production deviation during assembly.
Inspection and Repair Process
Hyundai retailers will review the involved vehicles and reinstall or replace the starter motor cover free of charge to the owner. Owners will be alerted by mail starting late October 2025. The company will also modify its online recall list and urge customers to check their vehicle's status by inputting the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the Hyundai or NHTSA website.
The manufacturer has said that the remedy is corrective, and there have been no field fires or damages to properties as of the date of recall filing.

For now, owners of affected Santa Fe models should avoid parking in enclosed spaces such as garages and should monitor for any burning odors or unusual electrical activity. Hyundai’s customer assistance center remains open to address owner concerns and coordinate service appointments through authorized dealerships.
