Ford Bronco New Energy SUV Revealed for China with EV and EREV Variants

Ford Bronco New Energy SUV Revealed for China with EV and EREV Variants
  • Ford introduces a full-size Bronco-inspired SUV in China in EV and EREV formats, manufactured with Jiangling Motors.

  • The EV variant offers a range of up to 650 km using BYD-sourced LFP battery packs.

  • China-exclusive, the Bronco New Energy targets Chinese appetite for rugged utility vehicles with extensive driving range.

Ford Targets China with Bronco New Energy EV and EREV SUVs

Ford revealed a Bronco-family full-size SUV, but this time it is China-exclusive—and electrified. Named the Bronco New Energy, the new SUV will be offered in battery electric (EV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) forms. The SUV is a product of a collaboration with Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) and will not be available for sale in North America or Europe.

This introduction is a mirror of Ford's broader China plan, as consumer appetite there for large, feature-laden utility vehicles continues to grow—particularly those that combine ample electric range with internal combustion backup.

China Exclusive Ford Bronco NEVs

Two Versions: One Electric, One Range-Extended

The BEV model will feature a 105.4 kWh LFP battery, supplied by BYD, one of China's largest battery manufacturers. Ford boasts an incredible 650 kilometers (404 miles) of range under CLTC conditions. The EREV version, however, uses a smaller 43.7 kWh battery and an engine generator, so it has 220 km (137 miles) of electric-only range and 1,220 km (758 miles) overall.

Both configurations deliver good output. The EV is powered by a 202 kW (271 hp) rear-axle-mounted electric motor. The EREV produces 180 kW (241 hp), again from a single rear-mounted motor. No dual-motor AWD configuration has been announced yet.

These figures render the Bronco New Energy a strong long-distance prospect, particularly for China's wide urban and semi-urban use cases. Interestingly, the employment of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells is focused on affordability, stability, and extended cycle life—attributes that suit the Chinese SUV consumer's high-mileage requirements.

Familiar Name, Different Mission

Although it wears the Bronco nameplate, this SUV is not built on the same T6 platform as its North American namesake. Instead, it rides on a China-market-exclusive chassis developed in conjunction with JMC. Its 116-inch wheelbase and nearly 198-inch overall length make it roughly the same size as a Ford Edge L or Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

Despite its size and its marketing, the new model is not aimed at rock-crawling or overlanding. There is no talk of locking diffs, underbody protection, or off-road suspension geometry. Instead, the Bronco New Energy appears to be targeted at a road-biased, family-sized utility vehicle—one that wears a rugged appearance to meet local market expectations but is designed first and foremost for on-road comfort.

Externally, the Bronco New Energy maintains the vertical proportions and squared-off lines an SUV deserves today. Look closer, however, and there are styling cues designed for Chinese tastes: full-width light bars, chromed accents in place of matte plastics, and a sleeker rear end. A 21-inch wheel option and massive panoramic glass roof also point to a premium bias.

Chinese Government Filing Confirms Production Specs

The vehicle was first seen in a China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) regulatory filing. The filing disclosed two drivetrain types, full exterior dimensions, and a breakdown of powertrain specifications. It is now known that both versions will be locally manufactured by JMC under Ford supervision.

The MIIT filings also reveal optional LiDAR sensors integrated into the roofline, suggesting the provision of a semi-autonomous driving suite. This would be in line with Chinese consumer expectations, where ADAS features are increasingly being considered par for the course for vehicles in this segment.

No Plans for U.S. or European Market

Ford has also confirmed that the Bronco New Energy is a China-only model and there are no export plans for now. U.S. consumers who desire a fully electric Bronco, thus, will have to wait for some other product, which will likely be developed under the Ford Model e umbrella.

In the meantime, this China-market Bronco gives Ford a way to stay in the game in the country's booming New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market, without going head-to-head against Tesla or BYD's top offerings. It is an acknowledgement that electrification strategies must vary by market—and that not every Bronco will be built for trails and mud.
