Demand for the new Mercedes CLA EV is exceeding expectations, resulting in delays in delivery and extended waiting times globally.
Mercedes is responding by stepping up production at its Rastatt factory with additional shifts to meet order levels.
The CLA lineup, which is built on the new MMA platform, includes both EV and internal combustion engine models—making the sedan a strategic model of importance.
Surprise Demand Tests Mercedes' Production Timing
Mercedes-Benz didn't anticipate the kind of demand for the new CLA—especially its electric variant. After starting to take orders, the company has seen demand for the CLA EV outpace supply at a very quick rate. Clients in various areas are now facing longer than expected delays, with production initially not being sized to handle this demand. The strong order book reinforces two key observations: small sedans haven't lost their relevance, and dual powertrain offerings are a winner in an asymmetric global market with spotty EV infrastructure. The CLA is an exercise in both.
Mercedes Counters with Rastatt Capacity Boost
To handle the increase in orders, Mercedes is boosting output at its Rastatt plant. A third shift has been introduced, and processes are being reshaped by teams to make more. According to Jörg Burzer, Mercedes-Benz production head, the company is acting decisively to boost delivery.
Both the EV and ICE versions of the CLA are produced here, which is built on the new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform. The platform supports both internal combustion and fully electric drivetrains, mirroring the company's policy of being flexible in light of local changes in EV preparedness.
The Tech Specs of the CLA Coincide with Its Market Timing
The CLA electric car features an 800-volt system and an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides more than 750 km of range on the WLTP cycle. Charging ability is also rivaling, with rapid charging capability that keeps downtime to a minimum.
Along with the EV, the likes of the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4Matic remain available with traditional powertrains, a option now viewed to have been visionary in the face of charging bottlenecks within much of Europe and North America.
The CLA Shooting Brake will also be included in the lineup, extending into the premium compact wagon market—a major one for Mercedes within Europe.
The CLA's return is telling in a market that has increasingly shifted towards crossovers and SUVs. That Mercedes is seeing this type of demand in a low-slung, four-door sedan shows a continued appetite for compact luxury—especially when paired with clever packaging, range ability, and brand cache.
It also suggests that the company's wager on a hybrid powertrain strategy could yield more near-term flexibility than all-electric. Consumers want options, and Mercedes is delivering.
Internal Strategy and Global Implications
Apart from the product itself, this demand curve will also impact Mercedes' overall production pace. Facilities like Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, which handle powertrains and EV components, are under scrutiny for potential capacity addition. Rare earth material availability remains a pending issue but has not yet caused critical disruptions in the CLA program.
The response to the CLA can establish the pattern for how Mercedes will engage with future MMA-based models—timing of introductions as well as ratio of ICE and EV production.
