2026 MG 5 Sedan
By Lorenzo Bianchi July 7, 2025
The 2026 MG5 Sedan gets a sportier fastback profile, ducktail spoiler, and twin exhausts.
Two engine options: 127 hp 1.5L CVT or 178 hp 1.5L turbo with 7-speed DCT.
Starting at just ~$8,360 USD in China—strong value with grown-up looks
Looks Sharper Than Before
The 2026 MG5 Sedan wastes no time trying to impress. One glance and you’ll spot the fastback silhouette, new ducktail spoiler, and twin exhausts tucked into a reshaped rear bumper. Proportions haven’t changed—still 4,715 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, 1,480 mm tall—but the posture feels lower, wider, more planted.
Up front, the big polygonal grille remains, framed by slim LED headlights. The sides are smooth, clean. A subtle crease runs along the door line, catching just enough light. The whole thing reads sportier—like MG gave it purpose without tacking on unnecessary drama.
Two Powertrains, One Attitude
Buyers get two choices. The entry-level 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine delivers 127 hp and 158 Nm, paired with an 8-speed CVT. Easygoing, suited to city life. But the turbocharged 1.5-liter is the one enthusiasts will care about. With 178 hp and 285 Nm through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, it does 0–100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Top speed? 200 km/h. Not outrageous, but quick enough to feel alive.
Both variants use front-wheel drive, with no EV or hybrid variant—at least not yet. But this thing isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about giving buyers something fun, usable, and affordable.
Cabin Trim with Real Touches
Inside, MG stuck with what works: a mix of stitched leatherette, black plastics, and bright orange accents in upper trims. The 12.3-inch floating touchscreen dominates the center stack, paired with a digital gauge cluster. Base models get a slightly smaller 10.25-inch setup.
Thankfully, some real buttons remain—especially for climate control. There’s also ambient lighting with 256-color options on higher trims, plus a decent audio system, six airbags, and MG Pilot’s Level 2 ADAS suite: adaptive cruise, lane keep, 360° camera, OTA updates, and AI voice support.
Where It Stands in the Market
Starting at RMB 59,900 ($8,360 USD) and topping out at RMB 69,900, the MG5 Sedan delivers value most rivals can’t touch. Think Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, or Toyota Vios in the same space—few offer this level of kit, and almost none with a fastback profile and twin-pipe rear.
This refresh doesn’t turn the MG5 into a sports sedan, but it makes it feel less anonymous. It’s bold without being loud, budget-friendly without feeling basic.
Final Thoughts
The 2026 MG5 Sedan sticks to what MG does well: practical cars with personality. The fastback roofline, ducktail, and turbo option give it something most compacts don’t have—charm. No need to overthink it. It’s affordable, sporty-looking, and surprisingly quick. And that’s exactly the point.
