A One-Off That Bridges Past and Present
Zagato isn’t new to one-offs, but the 2025 Alfa Romeo 8C DoppiaCoda feels different. Revealed at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, it’s not just a styling exercise. It’s a rolling homage—part performance coupe, part sculpture—commissioned by an Italian collector and built on the bones of the 8C Competizione.
If you remember the 2007–2010 8C, you’ll know what that means: a carbon-fiber body wrapped around a front-mid-mounted V8, rear-wheel drive, and a low-slung shape that never really went out of style. Zagato’s taken that base and carved something fresh from it.
The “DoppiaCoda” Explained
The name says it all. DoppiaCoda—“Double Tail.” It’s not just clever branding. At the rear, the design plays with contrasts: part truncated Kamm tail (classic Zagato “Coda Tronca”), part rounded, flowing volume that hints at vintage GTs.
There's a distinct horizontal edge that builds over the rear fenders, then drops into a sort of sculpted wing that looks like it's hovering just above the body. It's clean, dramatic, and unmistakably Zagato—like they took the idea of a racecar’s tail, but ran it through an art school filter.
The visual break between upper and lower surfaces tricks the eye a bit. It looks light on its wheels, like it's in motion even at a standstill. And yet, nothing feels fragile. It’s got presence, but without noise.
Underneath: Familiar V8 Punch
Beneath all that form, the DoppiaCoda stays true to its mechanical roots. It uses Alfa’s 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8, good for 450 hp. That’s paired with a six-speed automated manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. There are no hybrid tricks, no EV whispers—just old-school displacement and torque.
No official performance specs yet, but if the donor 8C is any benchmark, expect sub-five-second sprints and a top speed over 290 km/h (180 mph). Not track-car numbers, but more than enough to feel alive behind the wheel.
Craftsmanship Over Volume
There’s only one. That’s it. Built for a single collector, the 8C DoppiaCoda isn’t about chasing volume or press headlines. It’s about legacy. Zagato’s done this kind of thing before—cars like the TZ3 Stradale or the Aston Martin V12 Zagato come to mind—but this one leans harder into sculptural purity.
It’s also worth noting how clean the design is for something so niche. There’s no clutter. No excess aero. Just flowing lines, measured aggression, and the kind of restraint that usually only comes with age—or experience.
The 2025 Zagato Alfa Romeo 8C DoppiaCoda won’t be seen often. But it doesn’t need to be. In a world full of manufactured drama and oversized grilles, this car quietly reminds us what Italian design can be when it’s not trying to go viral.
