2024 Volvo C40 Recharge [US]

A remarkable achievement for Volvo Cars is the in-house development of the second-generation permanent magnet electric motor that drives the rear axles of the fully electric C40 and XC40 models. This demonstrates Volvo’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology and creating sustainable mobility solutions.

Let’s take a closer look at the updates that make these vehicles stand out:

1. Rear-Wheel Drive Variants for Enhanced Performance By distributing the weight of the battery and motors more evenly throughout the vehicle, the traction for the rear wheels is significantly improved compared to traditional front-engine ICE cars. This enhancement in performance adds to the driving pleasure and confidence experienced by Volvo drivers.

2. Single Motor Extended Range Models: Power and Efficiency The new Single Motor Extended Range C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge models feature a powerful 185 kW (248 hp) permanent magnet e-motor on the rear axle, combined with an 82 kWh battery pack. This combination of an energy-dense battery and an efficient motor allows the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge to achieve impressive ranges of up to 297 and 293 miles, respectively, on the combined EPA test cycle.

Charging has also been enhanced, thanks to the uprated 82 kWh battery pack, enabling a top charging rate of 200 kW DC. With this improvement, the car can be charged from 10% to 80% state-of-charge in just approximately 28 minutes.

3. Updated All-Wheel Drive Variant: Unparalleled Capability The Twin Motor all-wheel drive variants have also been updated to provide additional range. The previous set-up of two 150 kW electric motors on both front and rear axles has been replaced with an in-house developed 255 hp electric motor on the rear axle and a new 147 hp asynchronous electric motor on the front axle.

With the innovative asynchronous motor, energy conservation is optimized as the front-axle drive engages only when necessary. This clever feature contributes to the improvements in range.

The Twin Motor variants of the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge retain the 78 kWh battery pack, capable of charging at a top rate of 150 kW DC. As a result, the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD can now drive up to an impressive 254 miles, a 31-mile boost over the previous iteration. Similarly, the range of the C40 Recharge Twin Motor has improved to 257 miles from 226 miles on the combined EPA cycle.

4. Exterior Updates for Efficiency and Style Volvo understands that every detail matters. In addition to the mechanical enhancements, exterior updates have been made to improve efficiency and aesthetics. For instance, both the C40 and XC40 Recharge now boast a new 19-inch alloy wheel design that not only enhances their overall look but.
