Toyota presented the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD ProRunner Concept, known as the #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept, at the SEMA 2024 show, offering a race-focused vision for the new Tacoma lineup. This concept is designed to highlight Tacoma’s enhanced performance, versatility, and Baja-inspired engineering, combining features from the TRD Pro series with the XtraCab configuration.
- Toyota introduced the 2024 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Concept at SEMA 2024, showcasing an off-road focused, race-modified Tacoma model.
- Designed with Baja-inspired engineering, the ProRunner concept combines TRD Pro performance features with the Tacoma XtraCab’s two-door configuration.
- The ProRunner Concept is a collaboration with Legacy Motor Club and honors driver Jimmie Johnson’s off-road racing background.
- Built to compete in the Stock Mid-Size Off-Road Race Class, the concept features key TRD components including FOX Quick Switch 3 (QS3) Internal Bypass shocks and TRD Upper Control Arms.
- Enhanced safety measures include a custom roll cage and multipoint harnesses, with IsoDynamic Performance seats to support driver and navigator.
- The bed includes an aluminum-reinforced 6-foot bed, fitted with a fuel cell and spare tire carrier, and features a tailgate net for added weight reduction.
- Designer Kyle Williams created the truck’s distinctive livery, merging elements from Jimmie Johnson’s iconic paint schemes with classic TRD colors.
- The vehicle’s aesthetic integrates Toyota’s racing heritage with a 2025 TRD Pro exclusive “Mudbath” base coat, accented with retro TRD striping.
- Chrome side mirrors, ARB Sport Bar with custom lighting, and BFGoodrich tires on brushed aluminum TRD Pro wheels complete the retro look.
- Toyota’s partnership with Legacy Motor Club highlights Tacoma’s versatility and aligns with Toyota’s off-road legacy and innovations in racing vehicle design.
Collaboration with Legacy Motor Club and Jimmie Johnson
Toyota’s collaboration with Legacy Motor Club and legendary racer Jimmie Johnson added depth to the concept’s design. Johnson, widely recognized for his NASCAR career, has roots in off-road racing and a personal connection to Toyota trucks, having learned to drive in his uncle’s Toyota. This personal link with Toyota trucks is reflected in the ProRunner’s tribute to Johnson's off-road racing origins.
