Production of the Ford F-150 Lightning will commence next year at a new, state-of-the-art facility employing sustainable manufacturing practices. This cutting-edge factory is located at Ford’s renowned Rouge complex in Dearborn, just outside of Detroit.
According to Bill Ford, Executive Chair of Ford Motor Company, the F-150 Lightning is a milestone for both Ford and the American auto industry, as it represents a significant step towards a zero-emissions, digitally connected future. The F-Series has been America’s best-selling truck for 44 years, serving as the backbone of work across the country and earning the trust of generations of customers. With the introduction of the F-150 Lightning, Ford aims to redefine the iconic truck for a new era.
The Ford F-150 Lightning is a cornerstone of the automaker’s ambitious $22 billion global electric vehicle strategy. With the aim of leading electrification efforts in their strongest areas, Ford has introduced zero-emissions versions of its most popular and beloved franchises, including the Mustang, Transit, and F-150, with more developments expected in the coming years.
Not only is the F-150 Lightning impressively fast, quiet, and smooth, but it also offers an all-new experience for truck owners at a starting price comparable to today’s similarly configured F-150 models. The electric platform provides additional capabilities, such as sufficient energy to power an entire home and a spacious, lockable frunk with ample power and charging features.
To enhance the user experience and ensure the truck remains cutting-edge, Ford will utilize standard over-the-air software updates, known as Ford Power-Up. These updates will improve the technology experience, add new features, and resolve issues without requiring a visit to the dealership.
The F-150 Lightning marks a monumental moment for Ford, as America’s number one auto brand goes zero-emissions with its most popular vehicle. According to Ford President and CEO Jim Farley, the Lightning is faster than a Raptor, featuring standard 4×4, independent rear suspension, a power frunk, and enough energy to power a house for three days or host an epic tailgate party. Built at the historic Rouge factory, the F-150 Lightning embodies the potential of American innovation and progress.
The Lightning aims to deliver 563 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of near-instantaneous torque, making it the most powerful F-150 ever. Equipped with an extended-range battery, it targets a 0-60 mph time in the mid-4-second range. The standard-range model offers a maximum payload capacity of 2,000 pounds with 18-inch wheels, while XLT and Lariat trucks with the extended-range battery and Max Trailer Tow Package boast up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity. The low center of gravity enhances handling, ensuring confident maneuvering on slippery roads or through sandy terrain.
Ford aims to make electric trucks accessible to a broader audience, focusing on solving real problems for real people. The F-150 Lightning delivers on the promise of electric vehicles while maintaining the capabilities expected from a Built Ford Tough truck. According to Kumar Galhotra, Ford President, Americas and International Markets Group, the Lightning offers not only near-instant torque but also reliable towing and hauling capacities.
The F-150 Lightning is packed with intelligent features that showcase Ford’s ability to blend advanced digital technologies with proven engineering expertise, resulting in a smarter, more productive truck. The available Ford Co-Pilot360™ technology includes BlueCruise for true hands-free driving on over 100,000 miles of pre-qualified divided highways in the U.S. and Canada.
The truck also features available Onboard Scales, which uses sensors to estimate payload and inform customers of how much they are hauling. Integrated with Intelligent Range, this feature helps provide accurate range estimates based on the payload. The F-150 Lightning also introduces the available Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, which automates steering, throttle, and brake inputs to simplify hitching trailers.
Select vehicles will debut the available Phone As A Key feature, enabling customers to lock, unlock, and start their truck without needing to use a key fob or take their phone out of their pocket.
The F-150 Lightning’s features can improve over time with Ford Power-Up software updates, which enhance performance, upgrade quality, and add new functions and capabilities. Most updates take under two minutes and can be completed at the customer’s convenience.
Advanced Digital Experience for the F-150 Lightning
The F-150 Lightning Lariat and Platinum series debut the SYNC® 4A, a modern interface supported by a 15.5-inch touchscreen designed to adapt to driver behavior. SYNC 4A features natural voice control, cloud-connected navigation, and wireless access to popular services such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, integrated Amazon Alexa, and SYNC AppLink apps.
Complementing the digital experience is a 12-inch customizable instrument cluster that intuitively surfaces essential information. Animated graphics display the vehicle’s performance during hands-free highway driving or the effectiveness of regenerative braking, providing relevant details as needed.
Darren Palmer, General Manager of Battery Electric Vehicles at Ford Motor Company, stated that the F-150 Lightning is the smartest F-150 ever made. The immersive touchscreen provides customers with real-time information on their destination, payload, or remaining range. With Ford Power-Up software updates, the user experience will continue to improve over time.
A High-Tech Mega Power Frunk
The F-150 Lightning features a versatile and spacious front trunk, or “frunk,” that’s secure, lockable, and easily accessible. With 400 liters of volume and a 400-pound payload capacity, it can accommodate items like luggage or golf clubs. The frunk is designed with bumper-height clearance, is water-resistant, and includes four electrical outlets, two USB chargers, and a drainable floor suitable for food and beverage storage. With 2.4 kilowatts of power, it can support tools, TVs, laptops, speakers, and more, making it ideal for tailgating or a mobile work site.
Built Ford Tough
The F-150 Lightning undergoes rigorous Built Ford Tough testing, with a military-grade aluminum alloy body and an upgraded frame that supports the advanced battery. The first F-Series independent rear suspension and low center of gravity help improve ride stability and reduce steering roll. The truck is designed for off-road performance, with a 4×4 system featuring four selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Tow/Haul.
The battery is protected by metal skid plates, waterproof casing, and crash-absorption materials, and has been tested in extreme temperatures to ensure reliability. The F-150 Lightning also includes a state-of-the-art liquid cooling system and powertrain layout that manages heat distribution across the vehicle, allowing it to perform under the toughest conditions.
The F-150 Lightning is a testament to Ford’s commitment to innovation and durability, redefining what it means to be a Built Ford Tough truck.
