In the year in which it completed 25 years of official presence in Brazil, the BMW Group maintained the lead in sales of premium automobiles and motorcycles. The license plates for electrified cars BMW, BMWi and MINI, with hybrid or electric propulsion, grew above 300% in 2020 when compared to the previous year. The leadership in the premium segment was the same in motorcycles, with a historical record in sales in the country.
“In a challenging year like 2020, we remain leaders in the premium car and motorcycle market for our digital leadership, for launching and developing new technologies and for the commitment of our team, dealer network and customer confidence,” highlights Aksel Krieger, CEO and President of the BMW Group Brazil. “We closed 2020 with one in three premium cars sold in Brazil being BMW and we set historical records in the sale of electrified models and also in BMW Motorrad”, reinforces the executive.
In 2020, the BMW brand licensed 12,437 cars, according to Anfavea (National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers). The Bávara brand, leader in the national premium market, featured the Series 3 and X1 models, which accounted for approximately 70% of sales in the country. MINI registered 1,275 license plates. The BMW Group Brasil ended 2020 with 13,712 units emplacados nationwide and was the main premium group in the national automotive market.
The sale of BMW, MINI and BMWi electric and hybrid models totaled 1,132 units, up 300% over the previous year. The number of own public recharging points reached 250 units nationwide.
BMW Motorrad recorded its highest sales volume in Brazil in 2020, with 10,447 units sold representing a growth of 2.8% compared to 2019, when 10,158 motorcycles were registered. On the same basis of comparison, the total motorcycle market recorded a 15% drop in sales, according to data from Fenabrave (National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution). Highlight for the segment above 500CC, in which BMW Motorrad had absolute leadership with 7,693 motorcycles registered last year, an 8% growth in relation to 2019. Brazil was the world leader in license plates for BMW G310 GS and F 850 GS.
25 years in Brazil
To celebrate the 25 years of its official presence in Brazil, the BMW Group launched during 2020 the launch of more than 25 new products in the country, including new models, special series and electrified and hybrid versions, including the BMW X1 M Sport version 25 years – limited edition, with only 72 units manufactured in Araquari to celebrate the anniversary – and the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and BMW M135i, the MINI John Cooper Works GP and the BMW Motorrad S 1000 RR
Accelerating its digital transformation process, the BMW Group also opened new fronts of relationship with its customers in 2020. One was the first official vehicle store on the Free Market. The group also expanded the offer of vehicles on Instagram and Facebook sales channels, in addition to launching a virtual showroom, anticipating new trends in customers’ shopping experience.

The group also equipped its vehicles with new technologies. BMW was the first to offer vehicles in the Brazilian market that can be opened with the cell phone or smartwatch through the BMW Digital Key for iPhone. Also in 2020, the BMW Group reached 50 thousand connected vehicles in Brazil, with 100% of the models manufactured by the brand since December 2016 offering access to the internet through SIM card. BMW was also the first manufacturer to release a remote software update for the range of vehicles in Brazil. The BMWi and MINI brands were the pioneers in the national market in launching a vehicle compatibility with Amazon Alexa.
Finally, the company continued to expand the offer of plug-in hybrid vehicles – which are one of the long-term focus of the BMW Group – in the national market with the arrival of models such as the BMW X3 and the 330e M Sport version.
