McLaren’s never really done “mild,” but the 2014 McLaren P1 GTR Concept doesn’t just crank the volume — it rips off the knob and throws it at your face. Unveiled at Pebble Beach of all places (because of course), this thing is the P1 with all the guardrails removed. Literally and figuratively.
First impression? It looks pissed off. The standard P1 was no wallflower, but this takes it to another level. You can see it in the flared front fenders and that huge, race-style splitter that basically threatens the ground beneath it. The front track’s been pushed out 80mm, giving it a wider, hunkered-down posture. In the photos, it almost looks mid-corner just sitting still.
There’s carbon everywhere — vents, blades, intakes — all reshaped to keep the monster cool on track. And then there’s the rear. That twin-element rear wing? Fully fixed, with a Drag Reduction System for straight-line bursts. And the center-mounted exhaust, made from a fancy titanium-Inconel alloy, is as functional as it is dramatic. You can almost hear it snarl.
The 2014 McLaren P1 GTR Concept is a track-focused evolution of the P1, boasting 986 horsepower.

Aerodynamic enhancements include an 80mm wider front track, aggressive GT-style splitter, and a fixed rear wing with Drag Reduction System (DRS).

Exclusively available to existing P1 owners, the P1 GTR Concept is priced at approximately $3.36 million.
Power’s up too. The regular P1’s already nutty hybrid setup — 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric motor — has been turned up to 986 horsepower. Not just numbers for press releases either. McLaren says this is what you'd drive in their own customer racing program, complete with simulator training and pro coaching.
Oh, and about that price? Roughly $3.36 million. Not a typo. But to be fair, that buys more than a car. It’s a whole experience, from custom driver fitting to tailored track events. Still, this isn’t your average track-day toy. It’s serious business.
As for competition — sure, there’s the Ferrari FXX K and Aston Martin Vulcan in this very niche "billionaire track car" space. But the P1 GTR Concept has this rawness that feels more… mechanical? Less digital? Hard to pin down without seat time, but that’s the vibe it gives off.
Overall, it’s a reminder of what happens when McLaren engineers are told to forget the road and chase lap times. The 2014 McLaren P1 GTR Concept is insane, in the best way possible — and exactly the kind of ridiculous we need now and then.
