About the Car

2011 Mercedes-Benz Viano

The Mercedes-Benz Viano leads its class, defining the new benchmark for large-capacity vehicles. New engines and new transmissions reduce emissions and fuel consumption while enhancing performance. The new chassis offers the ultimate in ride comfort and driving safety. The cockpit and passenger compartment are more user-friendly and attractively appointed than ever. The Mercedes-Benz Viano is instantly recognisable by its “face”, featuring the Mercedes star in the style of the current passenger cars, and a newly designed rear section.

The Mercedes-Benz Viano and its striking new front design

The new “face” of the Mercedes-Benz Viano presents a yet more striking and distinctive look, in keeping with the style of the current passenger cars from Mercedes-Benz. Three slats painted in silver with chrome trims partition the radiator grille, fronting a sporty black grille featuring a diamond pattern. The radiator grille is offset by new reflector headlamps in a distinctive design. The reflector has been enlarged to increase the light output. The daytime driving lights which come as standard are integrated with their own light source in the headlamp housings, together with the fog lamps.

2011 Mercedes-Benz Viano

New: Bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime driving lights

The Mercedes-Benz Viano is now optionally available with a combination of Bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime driving lights, cornering lights, Add-Light system and a headlamp washer system. The cornering light is controlled via the indicator lever and is effective up to a speed of 40 km/h. The Add-Light system is active at speeds of up to 70 km/h, depending on the steering angle. The particularly extensive Viano Ambiente equipment line includes the Bi-xenon headlamps as standard.

The Mercedes-Benz Viano’s bumper also comes in a new, upgraded design featuring a honeycomb look. The smooth and ungrained surface is painted in the vehicle’s exterior colour on all Viano model variants. The same applies to the three-piece rear bumper, which now extends lower to emphasize the Viano’s dynamism.

New tail lights, improved visibility for indicators

The new tail lights are positioned on the right and left above the bumper. The one-piece lights with an integrated black cover in glass look flank the Viano’s rear end. An advantage of the new four-compartment light incorporating tail lamp/brake light, indicator, reversing light and rear fog lamp is improved visibility for the indicator resulting from the use of a new reflector. This change and a different front bumper clearly distinguish the Mercedes-Benz Viano’s exterior appearance from that of the Vito, whose tail lights remain unaltered.

The Mercedes-Benz Viano also sports numerous changes between the headlamps and tail lights. The maximum dimensional accuracy of the new fully galvanised steel wings ensures exact gap dimensions. For safety’s sake, the newly designed exterior mirrors with integrated side turn signals offer a larger field of vision. The exterior mirrors can now optionally fold in against the body when the driver leaves and locks the vehicle, to avoid damage in tight parking situations.

Different colours also contribute to the revamped appearance, with modern new paint finishes complementing the changes to the exterior of the Mercedes-Benz Viano.

A major plus: the numerous body variants of the Mercedes-Benz Viano

Mercedes-Benz continues to offer the Viano as the only model in its class in three different body lengths:

  • Viano compact – length 4763 mm, wheelbase 3200 mm
  • Viano long – length 5008 mm, wheelbase 3200 mm, extended overhang
  • Viano extra-long – length 5238 mm, wheelbase 3430 mm, extended overhang

In addition, the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo camper van is based on the long Mercedes-Benz Viano with a front-opening pop-up roof. This roof is also optionally available for the Viano Fun multi-purpose vehicle in its long variant.

All variants benefit from the full everyday practicality of the Mercedes-Benz Viano. With an overall height of just 1875 mm, every rear-wheel-drive Viano fits easily into standard garages, multi-storey car parks, underground car parks and car washes. The same even goes for the Mercedes Viano Fun and the Viano Marco Polo with closed pop-up roof and a vehicle height of 1960 mm.

Individual, practical, convenient – the Viano’s feel-good cockpit

The clear layout of the instrument panel and the clearly legible instruments have been retained – there are some things which simply defy improvement. The shift lever is new, however, featuring a high-gloss badge and chrome surround. In the upper control panel on the centre console, pushbuttons have replaced the previous rocker switches to facilitate intuitive operation while at the same time providing a more attractive appearance. The seat heating is now more finely adjustable, offering three levels as opposed to the previous two. The overhead control unit has been upgraded with two reading lamps and a polished finish. On vehicles equipped with rear air conditioning, corresponding new controls are also incorporated together with a display.

Numerous new items of equipment enhance the Mercedes-Benz Viano, offering scope for individualisation and assistance above all for the driver. The front-passenger seat base now incorporates an additional 12 V socket to supply power to electronic devices. Alternatively, the Mercedes-Benz Viano is available with a lockable valuables compartment (standard in Viano Marco Polo). A rearview camera is optionally available as a practical reversing aid in conjunction with the COMAND system. Its lens is integrated in the licence plate panel on the tailgate. When reverse gear is engaged, the camera picture is displayed on the COMAND screen, with superimposed lines providing additional assistance for the driver.

The standard scope of equipment for the Mercedes Viano Trend and all models higher in the range now includes a four-spoke multifunction steering wheel with new control buttons and matt chromed spoke trims, similar to the steering wheel of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Cutting-edge audio and video equipment

A new generation of radios is being introduced into all Viano variants, guaranteeing the best in information and entertainment. A Bluetooth hands-free system and a CD/DVD drive come as standard throughout the range, as does an Aux connection for separate devices. The top-of-the-range audio systems feature the new generation of voice control which goes by the name of Lingatronic, for radio, CD player/CD changer and navigation system. The new convenience telephony system is available as an alternative to the Bluetooth hands-free system, featuring a fixed telephone console, roof antenna and optimum voice quality.

The optional pre-installation for the Rear Seat Entertainment system provides the basis for keeping rear passengers informed and entertained. The Mercedes-Benz Viano covers the full spectrum of media wishes, from an entertaining film for the kids to an informative presentation for business associates. On request, it can be fitted at the factory with the corresponding wiring and mountings for devices in the roof liner. Hinged roof liner systems, monitors, DVD players and infrared headphones are available through Mercedes-Benz Accessories and can be fitted by authorised Mercedes-Benz workshops.

Elegant, stylish and exclusive: the new Lugano leather upholstery

The Viano offers seat covers in a new design for the driver and passengers. In addition to the attractive fabrics and stylish nappa leather covers in various colours, the new nappa leather upholstery in the Mercedes-Benz Viano which goes by the name of Lugano is deserving of special mention. Available in three colours, its grain finish and piping design provide for a consummately stylish appearance. This upholstery is complemented by decorative trims in fine burr walnut finish. The Lugano nappa leather upholstery comes as standard in the Viano Ambiente and is optionally available for the Mercedes-Benz Viano Trend. In the Viano Fun and Marco Polo the leather is available in orion grey.

New, high-quality interior panelling and trims are available as standard in the Mercedes-Benz Viano Trend and Ambiente and as an option in the Viano Fun to embellish the interior’s appearance and further enhance the great functionality which is integral to the Mercedes Viano. The scope of appointments includes optimised stowage facilities and carpeting. In addition to providing for a comfortable appearance, the high-quality carpeting also prevents scratches and knocks when the vehicle comes in for tough use – also in the load compartment. Side wall panelling and carpeting come in anthracite, while the middle sections sport the colour of the interior appointments.

Stylish and cosy: the new lighting concept with ambient system

The well-conceived ambient lighting system forms the core of the new lighting concept in the Viano Trend and Ambiente (optional in Viano Fun). A total of six light sources in the footwell illuminate the floor of the Mercedes-Benz Viano. This lighting is dimmed while the vehicle is in motion. Additional new interior lights are installed in the handle recesses at the rear. Fibre-optic cables also make up part of the ambient lighting. These discreetly illuminate the handle recesses while the vehicle is in motion and combine with the footwell lighting to conjure up a stylish and cosy atmosphere on board. The familiar interior lighting is also integrated in the handle recesses, together with new reading lights which can be operated individually. The latter present an elegant appearance in modern clear-glass look with a chrome ring.

The Viano’s interior designers have paid close attention to every last detail, as revealed by apparently minor features such as the new inside handle for the sliding door, whose new position renders it more accessible and markedly reduces the level of effort required to open the door. The rails to which the rear seats are fitted have been provided with rubber lips. In addition to lending the floor a more elegant appearance, these also facilitate installation and removal of the seats.

Lines and packages redefined

Mercedes-Benz has also redefined the established lines and equipment packages in some areas. The Mercedes Viano Ambiente, which has always featured a particularly broad scope of equipment, now additionally features Bi-Xenon headlamps as standard, for example, together with cornering lights, LED daytime driving lights, headlamp washer system and light-alloy wheels in size 7J x 17.

The previous Comfort Plus package for the Viano Fun has now been succeeded by the COMFORT FUN package. The otherwise unaltered scope of equipment including such treats as electric rear vent windows and an additional heat exchanger has now been extended to include a new multifunction steering wheel with trip computer.

Viano Marco Polo: innovative features for the yacht on wheels

The new generation of the compact Viano Marco Polo recreational vehicle and camper van also benefits from a number of new features. The established layout incorporating a generously sized kitchenette and cupboard unit on the left-hand side in the direction of travel with practical roller shutters has been retained, along with the unique movable seating system featuring electrically adjustable individual seats and electropneumatically inflatable side bolsters. New surface finishes and trims lend the living area in the Mercedes-Benz Viano Marco Polo a quality feel and appearance.

Optional flooring in wood look, similar to the flooring on an exclusive yacht, further embellishes the Viano Marco Polo at the rear. In addition to its homely yet stylish appearance, this floor covering is also hard-wearing and requires little care.

Two bright and particularly efficient LED lamps in the rear of the Mercedes-Benz Viano Marco Polo and the Viano Fun are an additional new feature, replacing the previous fluorescent lamp. The new lamps provide bright light as soon as they are switched on, illuminate the interior more effectively and consume markedly less power – an important factor when mains power remains out of reach for prolonged periods. The bed extension forming a head section over the luggage compartment of the Mercedes Viano Marco Polo can now be raised in stages with the aid of a strap and a support. This additional feature provides an additional noticeable enhancement to the good standard of sleeping comfort.

A second reading lamp now comes as standard in the Viano Marco Polo fitted with the optional roof bed and in the Mercedes-Benz Viano Fun with pop-up roof. This provides for added comfort by enabling more individual lighting arrangements when the roof bed is in use by two people.

Even the key to the Viano sports a new design

The new key featuring a stylish chrome clasp symbolises the high-quality interior and provides drivers with a subtle foretaste of the numerous innovations which await them inside the Mercedes-Benz Viano.

Completely reconfigured new chassis

While the Mercedes Viano’s front axle continues to be based on independent wheel suspension with spring struts, Mercedes-Benz has carried out a complete redesign of the axle’s finer points of detail. The host of new elements cover suspension springs and spring retainers, supporting bearings and suspension strut towers, transverse links including bearings, anti-roll bar and bearings. The modified axle setting ensures improved response. The steering additionally employs a new characteristic and a different torsion bar.

A similar situation applies to the driven rear axle. Here too, the sophisticated basic design involving independent wheel suspension on semi-trailing arms has been retained, but the development engineers have completely reconfigured the springs, auxiliary springs and shock absorbers and designed new bearings for the shock absorbers. The new bearings for the control arms have been designed with a special emphasis on comfort, with separated functions for longitudinal and lateral forces. The anti-roll bar and its bearings are also new developments.

Unmatched comfortable and safe handling

These developments provide for extremely precise, predictable and safe handling accompanied by outstanding comfort, running characteristics and noise levels. The Vanio offers the very highest standards of ride comfort, driving enjoyment and driving safety. Such all-round quality can only be topped by the air suspension including automatic level control on the rear axle, which remains available ex-factory.

Ultra-quiet travel in the greatest of comfort

Noise has also come in for close attention. Extensive computer simulations and ongoing monitoring of the results on the actual vehicle have enabled a marked reduction in noise levels. The balancer shafts in the new four-cylinder diesel variant ensure that so-called “second-order” vibrations are eliminated at source. The entire vehicle was subsequently analysed after eliminating these vibrations, giving rise to a diverse range of measures: absorbers in the interior and on the rear axle, specific reinforcement of the body structure, improved insulation and modified seals provide for ultra-quiet travel in the greatest of comfort.

No luggage restrictions: marked increase in payload reserves

There are no luggage constrictions to be considered when packing for journeys in the versatile and flexible Mercedes-Benz Viano. The development engineers have raised the permissible gross vehicle weight, accompanied by increases in the payload which are quite substantial in some instances. The permissible gross vehicle weight now totals 2.80 t (previously 2.77 t) as standard, while for the extra-long variants it stands at 3.05 t (previously 2.94 t) following the introduction of the new generation. According to model variant, the increase in payload may amount to as much as 100 kg.

Safe and sound – and a treat for the eyes

Comfort and safety in an attractive guise: the Ambiente variant of the Mercedes-Benz Viano now runs as standard on five-spoke 17-inch light-alloy wheels fitted with 225/55 R 17 tyres (previously 16-inch wheels with 225/60 R 16 tyres). This wheel and tyre combination is available for the other models as an option.

Powerful brakes and a host of invisible safety features

The Mercedes-Benz Viano comes with an unparalleled range of safety and assistance systems as standard. All models feature a brake system with powerful and robust disc brakes on all wheels, electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and adaptive brake lights which display an emergency braking signal when the brakes are fully applied.

Numerous invisible safety features are also on board. The ESP Electronic Stability Programme with anti-lock braking system (ABS), acceleration skid control (ASR) and brake assist (BAS) is obligatory for all Mercedes-Benz Viano models. Vehicles which are factory-fitted with a trailer coupling come with trailer stabilisation (also known as “trailer ESP) as standard. Start-off Assist (AAS), an automatic tyre pressure monitoring system, the PARKTRONIC parking and manoeuvring assistant and a reversing camera are optionally available to supplement the Viano’s comprehensive range of comfort and safety features.

Safety equipment to the very highest standard

In the event of an accident, the Mercedes-Benz Viano is also provided with the highest standard of safety equipment to limit the consequences. The driver’s and front passenger’s seats are provided with height-adjustable three-point seat belts, belt tensioners, belt force limiters, seat belt reminders and four-way head restraints. Driver and front passenger airbags also feature as standard. Optional extras include thorax sidebags (standard in the Mercedes-Benz Viano Ambiente) and windowbags. All passenger seats are fitted with integrated three-point seat belts and four-way head restraints.

As in passenger cars, for families with small children a label on the side bolsters now indicates the seats which are provided with standardised anchor points for child seats.

Engine and drive system: clean, extremely economical and offering top-notch performance

Clean, extremely economical and top performers: the Mercedes-Benz Viano is equipped with the new generation of diesel engines from Mercedes-Benz. Hundreds of thousands of these engines have already proven their worth in diverse Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. The new Mercedes-Benz Viano leads the way in environmental friendliness, with all engines meeting the Euro 5 emissions standard. Markedly reduced fuel consumption also lowers CO2 emissions to an exemplary minimal level. The BlueEFFICIENCY technology which features as standard plays a special role here. This innovative package is not to be found in any other large-capacity vehicle.

All diesel engines are equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter, a particulate filter and cooled exhaust gas recirculation. The new ECO Gear manual transmission offers a broad gear ratio spread for optimum performance and enables low fuel consumption and emission levels. The overall result is impressive response and acceleration combined with outstanding environmental friendliness, smooth running and economy. Top of the range is the V6 in the Viano CDI 3.0, which combines smooth running with impressive output and high tractive power. The latest version of this engine is also more powerful, more economical and more environmentally friendly.

Four-cylinder CDI: top performance, smooth-running, low emissions

At the core of the new generation of engines is the four-cylinder in-line unit which has the internal code OM 651. It is available in two power variants for the Mercedes-Benz Viano:

  • Viano CDI 2.0
    • Power output: 100 kW (136 hp) at 3800 rpm
    • Max torque: 310 Nm at 1400-2600 rpm
    • Fuel consumption in acc. with NEDC: 7.24 l/100 km
    • CO2 emissions: 190 g/km
    • Top speed: 174 km/h
    • Acceleration
      • 0-100 km/h: 14.1 s
      • 60-100 km/h in fifth gear: 12.5 s
      • 80-120 km/h in sixth gear: 18.2 s
  • Viano CDI 2.2
    • Power output: 120 kW (163 hp) at 3800 rpm
    • Max torque: 360 Nm at 1600-2400 rpm
    • Fuel consumption in acc. with NEDC: 7.24 l/100 km
    • CO2 emissions: 190 g/km
    • Top speed: 188 km/h
    • Acceleration
      • 0-100 km/h: 12.18 s
      • 60-100 km/h in fifth gear: 10.8 s
      • 80-120 km/h in sixth gear: 14.6 s

This represents a marked increase in power output and torque in comparison to the predecessor models. At the same time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced substantially – by up to 15 percent, depending on the engine variant. Apart from attaining surprisingly good values in absolute terms for its size and weight, the Mercedes Viano clearly leads its class in terms of fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Exceptionally high tractive power, durable chain-type camshaft drive

State-of-the-art engine technology provides the basis for the Viano’s exceptionally low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The high torque of the long-stroke engine with 83 mm bore and a stroke of 99 mm provides for unusually high tractive power. The two overhead camshafts actuate a total of 16 inlet and exhaust valves via cam followers with hydraulic valve clearance compensation. The camshafts are driven via a combination of gearwheels and a short chain, providing the robust basis for a virtually endless service life.

Fuel injection takes place by means of a common rail system. Particularly durable solenoid valves and seven-hole injection nozzles provide for extremely precise fuel injection, with up to four injections per combustion cycle. The benefits of this technology include a gentle build-up of pressure and a smooth-running engine. The maximum injection pressure stands at an impressive 1800 bar.

Charging is carried out in both power variants by a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry which combines high efficiency with swift response to movements of the accelerator pedal. Maximum torque is available right from very low engine speeds and over a broad rev range. Thanks to its combination of a rated engine speed of 3800 rpm and astounding elasticity, the four-cylinder engine has an unusually broad useful operating range between around 1000 and 4000 revs. This is unmatched by any other diesel engine in this class of vehicle.

Balancer shafts for all variants ensure the ultimate in smooth running

Common rail injection, the low-vibration forged crankshaft running on five bearings and the rear camshaft drive provide the foundation for surprisingly smooth-running engines. All four-cylinder engines also benefit from Lanchester balancing, with two counter-rotating shafts running under the crankcase driven by spur gears. Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer in this vehicle class to deploy balancer shafts in all four-cylinder engines of its large-capacity vehicles.

Unique: particularly economical demand-responsive auxiliary units

The development engineers have also devoted great attention to optimising the auxiliary units. The oil pump is a controlled vane-type pump featuring electrical actuation, for example. It controls its delivery rate automatically according to the given requirements. This reduces the power output, thereby lowering fuel consumption. The coolant pump also adjusts automatically to the given requirements, further helping to reduce fuel consumption.

Tuned to perfection: the ECO Gear six-speed manual transmission

The new ECO Gear six-speed manual transmission comes as standard for the Mercedes-Benz Viano CDI 2.0 and CDI 2.2. This transmission is a substantial contributory factor to the reduced fuel consumption and further enhanced dynamic performance of the Viano CDI with four-cylinder engine. Its defining feature is a particularly broad gear ratio spread, with a short first gear (i=5.076) and a long sixth gear (i=0.675) designed to keep the engine speed low.

This configuration accords due consideration both to typical situations such as hill starts with a horse or boat trailer and to long journeys on the motorway. Overall, the engine speed has been reduced substantially in the interests of lower fuel consumption and emissions. Another consequence of this strategy is a noticeable improvement in ride comfort.

The particularly user-friendly and well-proven five-speed automatic transmission is alternatively available as an option for the Mercedes-Benz Viano CDI 2.0 and Viano CDI 2.2. It comes as standard for the Viano 3.0 CDI and Viano 3.5.

V6 CDI: an impressive feat of engineering goes one better

The V6 engine in the Mercedes Viano 3.0 CDI is an accomplished feat of engineering and a pinnacle of engine design from Mercedes-Benz. The only six-cylinder engine to be deployed in a large-capacity vehicle attains impressive performance data for a diesel in this class, providing the basis for a special driving experience. The engine is based on an aluminium crankcase with a V angle of 72 degrees. Thanks to offset connecting rod journals, the engine runs more smoothly than any other diesel in its class. The technical highlights include a total of four chain-driven overhead camshafts, common rail injection with piezo injectors and eight injection holes per injector for ultra-fine atomisation of the fuel.

The latest version of the engine in the Viano CDI 3.0 offers ten percent more power, at 165 kW (224 hp), and a highly impressive level of torque, at 440 Nm. It complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard. At the same time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have fallen noticeably, by around five percent, and are surprisingly low in relation to the performance capabilities of the Viano CDI 3.0. Other enhancements of this latest version of the V6 include a maximum injection pressure of 1800 bar. Key data:

  • Viano CDI 3.0
    • Power output: 165 kW (224 hp) at 3800 rpm
    • Max. torque: 440 Nm at 1800-2400 rpm
    • Fuel consumption in acc. with NEDC: 8.5 l/100 km
    • CO2 emissions: 223 g/km
    • Top speed: 201 km/h
    • Acceleration 0-100 km/h: 9.1 s

Its impressive performance data, its unmatched smooth running and its admirably low fuel consumption and emission levels make the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz Viano CDI 3.0 a unique contender in its class which meets the very highest standards. The engine comes exclusively with a well-proven and particularly user-friendly automatic transmission.

Viano 3.5: in a class of its own

The Mercedes-Benz Viano 3.5 with its V6 petrol engine is also in a class of its own. The power delivery and smooth running of this six-cylinder engine are unmatched in any other large-capacity vehicle. The latest version of the Viano 3.5 complies with the Euro 5/l emissions standard. This engine also employs an automatic transmission. Key data:

  • Viano CDI 3.5
    • Power output: 190 kW (258 hp) at 5900 rpm
    • Max. torque: 340 Nm at 2500-5000 rpm
    • Fuel consumption in acc. with NEDC: 11.9 l/100 km
    • CO2 emissions: 279 g/km
    • Top speed: 217 km/h
    • Acceleration 0-100 km/h: 8.7 seconds

From study to reality: BlueEFFICIENCY as standard for clean and economical motoring

First announced by reference to a study at the 2008 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the vision of BlueEFFICIENCY technology has now become reality, reducing fuel consumption and emissions in the Mercedes-Benz Viano. It features on board every Viano as standard, as confirmed by a label below the A-pillar. The scope of the package is unique in the class of large-capacity vehicles: ECO start/stop function (not for automatic transmissions), battery management, tyres optimised for minimum rolling resistance, ECO power steering pump, shift point indicator (not for automatic transmissions), a controlled fuel pump and internal engine measures demonstrate the cutting-edge technology involved.

The BlueEFFICIENCY package which features as standard combines sustainability and economy in exemplary fashion. It further reduces the Viano’s traditionally low fuel consumption by an additional 0.2-0.3 litres per 100 km (6.6 g of CO2 per km) in the new generation, according to model and engine variant.

Long maintenance intervals also contribute to the Mercedes Viano’s sustainability and economy. The Assyst service computer which comes as standard calculates the oil-change intervals on a flexible basis according to the actual use of the vehicle. The average interval across all engines stands at 30,000 km or two years. Higher mileages are also possible between oil changes, depending on the intensity of use and the individual driving style.

Robust and quiet: 4MATIC all-wheel drive further enhanced

The Viano 4MATIC with permanent all-wheel drive and variable power distribution by means of the 4ETS traction system also benefits from numerous innovations. A new bearing for the front-axle transmission and an increased oil volume reduce wear on the all-wheel drive. Helical gearing for the differential provides for smoother running. As previously, the Mercedes-Benz Viano 4Matic is available exclusively in conjunction with the two power variants of the four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission (Viano CDI 2.0/2.2 4MATIC). The Mercedes-Benz Viano 4MATIC now also complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard.
