A New Electric Anchor in Volvo’s Lineup
The 2027 Volvo EX60 arrives as a fully electric midsize SUV positioned at the heart of Volvo Cars’ global ambitions. It is a five-seat family vehicle designed to address the practical concerns that still shape EV adoption, notably driving range, charging time, and everyday usability. According to Volvo Cars, the EX60 represents its first entry into the largest electric vehicle segment worldwide, a move aimed at expanding both market reach and electric share.
Exterior Proportions Shaped by Efficiency
Visually, the EX60 follows familiar Scandinavian restraint while leaning heavily on aerodynamic logic. A low front end, sloping roofline, and tapered body sides work together to achieve a quoted drag coefficient of 0.26. The proportions are obviously determined by efficiency rather than ornamentation, and the stance is measured rather than aggressive.
Focus on Material and Cabin Area
There is plenty of space for luggage and rear legroom thanks to the long wheelbase and flat interior floor. Flexibility is a top priority for Volvo, as demonstrated by the ingenious storage options incorporated throughout the cabin. Materials are described as natural and high-end, reinforcing the brand’s long-standing focus on calm, refined interiors rather than visual drama. For audio-focused buyers, the EX60 offers a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, including headrest speakers for all four main seats, a first for the brand.
Range, Charging, and Power Systems
Three electric powertrain options are available for the EX60 at launch. In WLTP testing, the P12 AWD variant can travel up to 810 km, while the P10 AWD can travel up to 660 km. A rear-wheel-drive P6 version is rated at up to 620 km. Charging performance is a central claim: Volvo states the EX60 can add up to 340 km of range in ten minutes when connected to a 400 kW fast charger, based on testing of the P12 variant. Range and charging figures remain preliminary and subject to real-world conditions.
Software, Intelligence, and Safety
Built on the new SPA3 architecture and powered by Volvo’s HuginCore system, the EX60 is positioned as the brand’s most intelligent vehicle to date. It debuts Google’s Gemini AI assistant, enabling more natural voice interaction, and runs on Android Automotive OS. Safety remains foundational. The EX60 introduces Volvo's multi-adaptive safety belt, which is made to customize protection for each occupant, and has a reinforced safety cage made of boron steel. The car can change after delivery thanks to the standard over-the-air updates.
Market Context and Availability
The EX60 enters a competitive electric midsize SUV field, where range, charging speed, and perceived safety are increasingly decisive. Production begins this spring in Sweden, with European deliveries starting this summer and the US market following in late spring. The EX60 is positioned not as a niche EV, but as a central pillar in Volvo Cars’ transition toward a fully electric lineup.
