Renault has finally done it — the 2027 Renault 5 Turbo 3E is more than a concept, it’s a rolling, smoking, sideways reality. This week in Corsica, two prototypes made their first public runs at the Historic Tour de Corse rally, marking the 40th anniversary of Jean Ragnotti’s iconic 1985 win in the original Maxi 5 Turbo

Under the bright Corsican sun, the 3E looked every bit as wild as fans had hoped. It’s short, wide, and completely unbothered by modern restraint — just 4.08 meters long and 2.03 meters wide, sitting like a rally toy with supercar presence. Renault calls it a “mini-supercar,” and that feels accurate. Its carbon-fiber body and aluminum platform keep weight just under 1,450 kg, while its 43/57 front-to-rear weight distribution gives it the twitchy, tail-happy personality of its turbocharged ancestor.

Retro Design, Electric Fury

The visual nods to the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 are deliberate and theatrical. Boxy fenders, squared LED headlights, and a stance that seems to crouch mid-corner — it’s clearly inspired by the past, but nothing about it feels dated. The electric details are cleanly integrated, the proportions exaggerated in all the right ways. Two in-wheel electric motors at the rear deliver a combined 555 hp and 4,800 Nm of torque, which is about as subtle as a firework display. Each motor can be controlled independently, making torque vectoring more of an art form than a system setting.

Julien Saunier, Renault’s ambassador driver, handled the car during its demonstration runs, throwing it into drifts along the Tour de Corse’s famous Notre Dame de la Serra and Montegrosso stages. He described it as “a true rallying beast” — and from the footage, that seems accurate. Performance Meets Heritage

The performance numbers speak loudly: 0–100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds, an 800V battery with 70 kWh capacity, and up to 330 kW fast charging that takes it from 15 to 80 percent in 15 minutes. Range is expected to exceed 400 km on the WLTP cycle. Yet none of that matters as much as how it moves — compact, alive, and a little unhinged, just like the 1980s original.

Reservations opened earlier this year, with 1,980 units planned, a nod to the Renault 5 Turbo’s launch year. Prices start at £140,000, and buyers can choose historic-inspired liveries or work directly with Renault’s design team to personalize their cars. Production begins in 2027 after homologation wraps up.
