2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback
By Lorenzo Bianchi June 9, 2026
The 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback is a fully electric subcompact SUV.
It shares its platform with the next-generation Nissan LEAF but receives Mitsubishi-specific styling.
Sales are expected to begin in North America during late summer or early fall 2026.
A Familiar Name Returns in Electric Form
Mitsubishi Motors has revealed the first images of the 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback, an all-new battery electric vehicle that will join the brand's North American lineup later this year.
The name carries significant history. Eclipse first appeared in North America in 1990, attached to a sporty coupe that became one of Mitsubishi's best-known products. This latest Eclipse Sportback takes a very different approach. Instead of a coupe, it arrives as a fully electric subcompact SUV, reflecting the direction of today's market and the company's broader electrification plans.
Distinct Mitsubishi Styling Separates It From LEAF
Although the Eclipse Sportback is based on the next-generation Nissan LEAF through the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Mitsubishi says the vehicle receives its own visual identity.
The first images show a sleek crossover with a fastback-style roofline, short overhangs and a clean surfacing treatment. Up front, the SUV features a closed-off grille area typical of modern EVs, framed by slim lighting elements that stretch toward the fenders. The nose appears lower and more sculpted than current Mitsubishi SUVs.
Around the rear, a full-width lighting treatment emphasizes the vehicle's width. The sharply tapered roofline flows into a pronounced tail section, giving the Eclipse Sportback a more coupe-like profile than a traditional family SUV. Distinct front and rear fascias, unique lighting signatures and Mitsubishi's Triple Diamond branding help separate it from its Nissan counterpart.
Electric Expansion Continues
Technical specifications remain limited for now. Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Eclipse Sportback is derived from the next-generation Nissan LEAF, though battery capacity, driving range, charging speeds and performance figures have not yet been released. [Unverified]
What is known is that the model represents another step in Mitsubishi's long-running involvement with electrified vehicles. The company points to its early EV development work in Japan during the 1970s, the launch of the i-MiEV in 2009, and the introduction of the Outlander PHEV that followed.
Part of the Momentum 2030 Strategy
The Eclipse Sportback forms part of Mitsubishi's Momentum 2030 business plan, which calls for a steady expansion of the brand's electrified vehicle lineup.
According to the company, at least one new or substantially updated model will be introduced annually through 2030. The Eclipse Sportback will be followed by a new off-road-focused Outlander derivative expected to arrive in early 2027.
For now, Mitsubishi is keeping many of the details under wraps. Pricing, final specifications and a precise launch date have yet to be announced. What the first reveal does provide is a clear indication of where the brand intends to go next, with electric vehicles playing an increasingly central role in its future lineup.
