2027 Mercedes-Maybach S 680 US Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The M 177 Evo V8 in the S 680 now produces 450 kW (plus 17 kW from the ISG) and 850 Nm (plus 205 Nm), putting it roughly on par with the outgoing V12.

  • MB.OS makes its first appearance in a Maybach, running fourth-generation MBUX with a Maybach-specific rose-gold instrument design and a generative-AI virtual assistant.

  • A leather-free interior option debuts for the first time, pairing ARTICO man-made leather with a linen-and-recycled-polyester "Mirville" textile.

A Grille Built for Ceremony

The Mercedes-Maybach S 680 doesn't so much arrive as announce itself. The Maybach grille grows by 20 percent and can now be ordered with a luminous surround, and in certain markets the C-pillar emblem and the upright hood ornament light up too. Rose-gold accents run through the double-star headlamps, and Mercedes added a projector in the side sills that throws the Maybach wordmark onto the pavement as the doors open — a flourish that feels more theater than function, and works. Buyers picking a V12 car get a distinct grille emblem to mark it out from the eight-cylinder version.

Same Long-Wheelbase Presence

Mercedes hasn't published fresh exterior dimensions for this update, so the S 680 [Inference] likely retains the extended-wheelbase proportions Maybach models are built around — a stretched rear cabin being the whole point of the car. What has changed are the details: two-tone chrome and gloss-black handle strips, restyled tail lights echoing the front star motif, and new forged wheel designs, including a 21-inch gold-finish MANUFAKTUR option with a center cap star that stays upright on a ball-bearing mount regardless of wheel speed.

A Cabin Built Around MB.OS

Inside is where the bigger story sits. MB.OS, Mercedes' unified vehicle operating system, shows up in a Maybach for the first time, running fourth-generation MBUX behind a standard Superscreen — a 36.6-centimeter center display and 31.2-centimeter passenger screen under one glass panel, with the instrument cluster available in 3D. The dials get a Maybach-specific treatment, glowing in rose gold with a gold emblem set between the gauge rings. The virtual assistant draws on ChatGPT-4o, Bing Search and Google Gemini for conversation and appears as a rose-gold Mercedes star avatar. Rear passengers get their own pair of 13.1-inch displays and individual remote controls covering climate, blinds and entertainment, plus cameras for video calls.

Power Without Drama

Under the hood, the reworked M 177 Evo V8 closes much of the gap to the V12 that remains optional in select markets. Mild-hybrid support from a 23-hp-class integrated starter generator and twin Lanchester balance shafts are meant to keep the power delivery smooth rather than dramatic — very much the Maybach brief. A new AIRMATIC system adds predictive damping that reads road data shared anonymously by other Mercedes-Benz vehicles ahead, adjusting the suspension before the car hits a bump.

Everyday Indulgence

The rear cabin gets automatic comfort doors, a ten-liter refrigerated compartment, and dedicated holders for the brand's silver-plated Robbe & Berking champagne flutes — a detail Maybach has offered since 2002. A new leather-free interior scheme, paired with open-pore wood trim, signals Mercedes testing sustainable materials at the top of its lineup without stepping away from traditional Nappa leather as the default.

Where It Fits

The S 680 continues to sit above the standard S-Class as Mercedes' answer to the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur, leaning on MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure — now with hundreds of pre-validated paint and trim combinations — to justify the step up.
