2027 Mercedes-Benz VLE 300 Obsidian Black

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • First Mercedes-Benz model built on the new modular Van Architecture platform.

  • electric range of more than 700 km WLTP with the option to fast-charge at 800 volts.

  • MPV versatility for up to eight passengers and riding comfort comparable to a limousine.

Mercedes Electric Vans: A New Era

Mercedes-Benz's attitude to electric mobility in the premium van market is changing, as evidenced by the 2027 VLE. Developed as the first vehicle on Mercedes-Benz’s new Van Architecture, the VLE blends the spaciousness of a multi-purpose vehicle with the driving refinement typically associated with a luxury limousine.

Mercedes describes it as a “Grand Limousine,” a label that reflects both the vehicle’s scale and its purpose. The design is meant to accommodate a broad range of customers, from families needing flexible space to high-end shuttle services looking for a refined passenger environment.

In practical terms, the VLE is built to transport up to eight passengers, while maintaining the quiet, composed ride expected of the brand.

Exterior Design Shaped by Aerodynamics

The VLE introduces a noticeably different design language compared with previous Mercedes vans.

The profile is defined by a low, streamlined form. The roofline emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency by extending smoothly toward a rounded rear portion. For a car this size, the resulting drag coefficient of 0.25 is exceptionally low.

At the front, the VLE carries a reinterpretation of Mercedes-Benz’s signature grille, paired with a full-width light strip linking the headlights. Depending on configuration, the design may feature an illuminated grille frame and star-shaped daytime running lights.

A similar concept underpins the back design. The arc-shaped taillights that encircle the back with a continuous ring of illumination are what set it apart from a distance.

Generally speaking, the impression is deliberate but controlled. Efficiency is obviously given top priority in the design without sacrificing the visual identity of the brand.

Long-Distance Capability and Electric Powertrain

An electric drivetrain built for efficiency and long-distance travel sits beneath the VLE's bodywork.

The VLE 300 electric version produces 203 kW, while the upcoming VLE 400 4MATIC variant delivers more than 300 kW through a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.

Energy comes from a 115 kWh battery, using new NMC battery technology. In WLTP testing, the vehicle is expected to deliver a range of more than 700 kilometers, positioning it among the longest-range electric vehicles in its segment.

The VLE also uses 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing rapid DC charging. Under optimal conditions, the battery can recover up to 355 kilometers of driving range in roughly 15 minutes at a fast-charging station.

Driving Dynamics and Suspension

Ride height adjustments of up to 40 millimeters are possible with the VLE's AIRMATIC air suspension with level control. At highway speeds, the technique increases stability and aerodynamic efficiency.

Another key feature is rear-axle steering with a seven-degree steering angle. This reduces the turning circle to 10.9 meters, making the large vehicle noticeably easier to maneuver in tight urban spaces.

Combined with the electric drivetrain’s quiet operation and extensive sound insulation, the result is intended to deliver a remarkably smooth driving experience.

Passenger Experience and Interior Technology

The VLE's internal goal is to create what Mercedes refers to as a "immersive spatial experience."

The driver screen, central touchscreen, and passenger display are all integrated into the optional MBUX Superscreen, which spans the dashboard. The AI-powered MB.OS operating system powers the interface, which offers voice communication, over-the-air upgrades, and advanced driver assistance functions.

Rear passengers receive an equally ambitious setup. A 79-centimeter panoramic screen with 8K resolution retracts from the roof, transforming the cabin into a cinema, gaming space, or mobile office.

Another distinguishing characteristic is the flexibility of the seating. With detachable seating systems that, when fully cleared, provide up to 4,078 liters of cargo capacity, the interior can be arranged with five to eight seats.
