A More Distinctive S-Class Presence
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S 580e 4MATIC W223 arrives with what Mercedes-Benz describes as the most comprehensive update within a single S-Class generation. More than half the car has reportedly been redesigned, updated, or re-engineered, covering everything from lighting systems to onboard software architecture.
Visually, the changes remain restrained but noticeable. The W223 still carries the familiar long-wheelbase proportions and smooth, uninterrupted surfacing that define the current S-Class. What changes is the level of visual drama.
The radiator grille is now roughly 20 percent larger and, for the first time, illuminated. Tiny chrome-finished Mercedes stars embedded into the grille create a more layered appearance, especially at night. The upright hood ornament can also illuminate optionally, pushing the flagship sedan into a slightly more theatrical direction without abandoning its formal character.
The revised DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps now feature a twin-star lighting signature and micro-LED technology that expands the high-resolution illumination field by approximately 40 percent. Mercedes claims the adaptive high beam can project up to 600 metres ahead under suitable conditions.
At the rear, new taillights incorporate chrome-framed star graphics, giving the updated S-Class a more recognisable nighttime signature.
MB.OS Turns The Cabin Into A Digital Lounge
The largest transformation happens inside.
The updated S-Class introduces Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS, which now serves as the central digital architecture for the entire vehicle. It powers the fourth-generation MBUX interface and integrates services including ChatGPT-4o, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini within the “Hey Mercedes” assistant.
A standard MBUX Superscreen combines the 14.4-inch central display and 12.3-inch passenger screen beneath a continuous glass surface. Rear passengers receive larger 13.1-inch entertainment displays along with detachable remote controls that operate climate, seating, entertainment, and ambient functions.
Mercedes-Benz also revised the steering wheel controls following customer criticism of earlier touch-sensitive layouts. Physical rocker switches and a roller-style volume control return, improving usability during daily driving.
Additional comfort upgrades include heated seat belts, Digital Vent Control, and a new electric air filtration system capable of removing extremely fine airborne particles from the cabin environment.
Plug In Hybrid Power Gains More Range And Refinement
The S 580e 4MATIC continues as the electrified flagship within the regular S-Class range.
Mercedes-Benz says the updated plug-in hybrid system combines the revised M 256 Evo inline-six petrol engine with a more powerful electric motor, increasing system output by up to 55 kW over the previous generation.
Electric-only driving range is quoted at around 100 kilometres [Unverified depending on market specification and WLTP cycle]. The drivetrain also adopts worldwide-standard petrol particulate filters and pressurised fuel tanks as part of the broader refinement package.
Ride quality remains central to the S-Class identity. Standard AIRMATIC suspension and optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL now feature predictive damping adjustments for longer speed bumps, while rear-axle steering of up to 10 degrees improves manoeuvrability in urban environments.
The formula itself has not shifted dramatically.
The 2027 S 580e 4MATIC still prioritises silence, composure, and long-distance comfort above outright aggression. Mercedes-Benz simply added a heavier layer of digital sophistication around it.
