Jaecoo has released full Australian specifications for the J7 SHS-P, the plug-in hybrid version of its mid-size SUV, ahead of a Model Year 2027 rollout. The brand — a Chery-owned name that only launched globally in 2023 — is positioning the J7 as a hybrid that leans hard into daily electric driving without giving up the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer trips.

Exterior design observations

Jaecoo's spec sheet points to a "signature waterfall grille" as the design's centrepiece, paired with power-retracting door handles and gloss-black trim running along the beltline, roof pillars and lower doors. Both Track and Summit trims get LED projector headlights with automatic high-beam control, LED tail lights and a gloss-black rear roof spoiler. Summit adds a panoramic sunroof with a powered sunshade and privacy glass around the luggage area, neither of which are fitted to Track.

Vehicle proportions and stance

The J7 measures 4,500mm long, 1,865mm wide and 1,670mm tall, riding on a 2,672mm wheelbase. Both trims sit on 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/50 R19 Kumho tyres. Weights vary by drivetrain: tare mass runs from 1,794kg in front-wheel-drive form to 1,923kg with all-wheel drive, with gross vehicle mass rated at 2,210kg and 2,450kg respectively.

Interior space and technology

Seating is fabric-trimmed across both trims, with leather used on the centre console and lower door areas. The front electric motor alone contributes 150kW and 310Nm; all-wheel-drive versions add a rear motor rated at 113kW and 210Nm. Electric-only range comes in at 100km (NEDC) for front-wheel-drive models and 80km for all-wheel drive, with combined fuel consumption rated at 1.3L/100km and 1.9L/100km respectively. DC fast charging can take the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in around 20 minutes.

Practical usability features

Luggage capacity runs to 340 litres under the cargo cover, 500 litres up to the roofline, and 1,265 litres with the rear seats folded. Towing is limited to a 750kg unbraked capacity, with a maximum towball download of 75kg. Safety equipment is extensive and largely shared across trims, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centring, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic assist, while Summit adds a 360-degree camera system that Track does without.
