INFINITI Expands Into The Heart Of The Luxury SUV Market
INFINITI has spent the last several years trying to rebuild momentum across its lineup, and the all-new 2027 INFINITI QX65 may be one of the brand’s most important launches yet.
Positioned directly in the center of the premium midsize SUV segment, the QX65 introduces an entirely new nameplate for the brand while pushing INFINITI toward a more design-focused and technology-heavy direction.
And visually, it immediately feels different from most previous INFINITI crossovers.
Rather than following the upright proportions of a traditional family SUV, the QX65 adopts a much sleeker fastback-style silhouette with a heavily arched roofline and wide planted stance. The overall shape leans closer to a luxury crossover coupe, though without sacrificing the practicality buyers in this segment still expect.
That balancing act is not always easy to pull off.
The Fastback Design Changes INFINITI’s Direction
The exterior is clearly the centerpiece of the QX65 project.
INFINITI describes the design as dynamic and emotional, highlighted by precisely sculpted bodysides and a flowing roofline intended to create stronger curb appeal. One of the most interesting finishes is the newly developed Sunfire Red paint, which uses genuine gold-coated glass flecks to create added depth and movement under changing light conditions.
It sounds excessive on paper. In practice, it likely gives the QX65 a much richer appearance than traditional metallic paint. [Inference]
Different trim levels also push the design in slightly different directions.
The SPORT model adopts a more aggressive front grille design together with 20-inch wheels, gloss black carbonite interior trim, and a darker graphite headliner. Meanwhile, the AUTOGRAPH trim focuses more heavily on craftsmanship with satin chrome exterior detailing, a contrasting black roof, and 21-inch machined alloy wheels.
The AUTOGRAPH’s interior may be the more interesting part though.
Semi-aniline leather seating with asymmetrical quilting inspired by folded kimono fabric gives the cabin a distinctly Japanese luxury atmosphere. Open-pore wood accents and a quilted dashboard further separate it from the colder minimalist designs becoming common in the luxury segment.
Technology Focuses On Everyday Luxury
Inside, the QX65 combines premium materials with a fairly extensive technology package.
Dual 12.3-inch displays anchor the dashboard, while Google built-in functionality integrates Google Maps and Google Assistant directly into the infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also come standard.
Audio upgrades play a major role as well.
SPORT models receive a 16-speaker Klipsch Premium audio system with 600 watts of power, while AUTOGRAPH versions upgrade to a 20-speaker Klipsch Reference Premiere system producing 1,200 watts. The flagship trim also adds Individual Audio headrest speakers for targeted music and phone-call playback.
INFINITI also loads the SUV with driver-assistance technology.
Available systems include 3D Around View Monitor, Front Wide View, Invisible Hood View, and ProPILOT Assist 2.1 for hands-free freeway driving in certain conditions.
VC Turbo Power Keeps Things Familiar
Underneath, the QX65 uses INFINITI’s Variable Compression Turbo engine producing 268 horsepower and 286 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs with a 9-speed automatic transmission and standard Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.
INFINITI says the powertrain was specifically tuned for sharper throttle response and more confident acceleration. EPA estimates stand at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.
Importantly, the fastback roofline does not appear to compromise practicality too heavily.
The second-row seats slide, recline, and fold, while cargo capacity reaches 35.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 67.7 cubic feet with them folded flat.
Pricing starts at $53,990 before destination charges.
For INFINITI, the QX65 feels less like a niche addition and more like a direct attempt to reestablish itself properly in the modern luxury SUV market.
