A darker take on Hyundai’s flagship EV design
The 2027 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink doesn’t change the shape of the SUV, but it alters how it reads on the road.
This is still a large, three-row electric SUV with a broad stance and a long, upright silhouette. The difference lies in the detailing. Hyundai has stripped back the brightwork and replaced it with gloss black and black chrome finishes. Even the badges, window trims, and roof rails follow that theme.
The 21-inch turbine-style wheels, finished in black, stand out against the body. They fill the arches cleanly, giving the car a more planted look than the standard version.
It’s not aggressive. More restrained than that. Just darker, tighter, and a bit more deliberate in how it presents itself.
Proportions remain built around space and presence
There’s no attempt here to disguise the size.
The Hyundai Ioniq 9 continues to prioritize interior space, and that shows in its proportions. The wheelbase stretches long enough to accommodate three proper rows, while the roofline stays relatively flat to preserve headroom.
That upright rear section might not chase coupe-like styling trends, but it makes sense for the role. This is clearly a family-focused EV first, with design adjustments layered on top rather than structural changes.
The Black Ink treatment simply sharpens what was already there.
Interior leans fully into a monochrome theme
Inside, the shift is more immediate.
The entire cabin adopts a blacked-out finish. Seats, trim, steering wheel, even the aluminum accents lean into a darker palette. It gives the space a more enclosed, lounge-like feel, especially when paired with the panoramic roof.
The layout itself remains familiar. Six seats as standard, with first- and second-row relaxation seats that recline and include ventilation. The third row isn’t an afterthought either, with heating included.
Materials add a bit more interest. The eco-suede headliner uses corn-derived fibers, and the aluminum trim carries a more organic, patterned finish rather than a plain metallic surface.
Strong performance backed by high-capacity battery
Underneath, this version uses the most powerful configuration available for the Ioniq 9 lineup.
A dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup produces 422 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to move a vehicle of this size with confidence, even if outright performance figures aren’t the focus here.
Energy comes from a 110.3 kWh battery pack. Charging is handled through an 800-volt system, supporting up to 350 kW DC fast charging. Under ideal conditions, Hyundai claims a 10 to 80 percent charge can be completed in around 24 minutes.
A native NACS port is included, which broadens access to fast-charging networks.
Practical features still define everyday usability
Despite the focus on design, usability hasn’t been pushed aside.
There’s vehicle-to-load functionality for powering external devices, multiple high-output USB-C ports across all three rows, and a digital rearview mirror to improve visibility when fully loaded.
Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 is also included, allowing the vehicle to maneuver itself in tighter spaces. Add in a 14-speaker Bose system and a head-up display, and the tech package leans toward convenience rather than novelty.
Positioned as a premium step within the lineup
The Calligraphy Black Ink trim sits at the top of the Ioniq 9 range.
It doesn’t introduce a new platform or redefine the vehicle, but it refines the experience. The focus is clear: take an already large, capable electric SUV and give it a more distinctive identity without compromising its core strengths.
