2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive Introduces Fifth Generation Design
BMW has detailed the fifth-generation X5, introducing a revised exterior, a redesigned cabin and updated six-cylinder engines. The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive combines a 3.0-litre petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid technology and standard all-wheel drive.
The new model adopts several technologies developed for BMW's Neue Klasse vehicles, including its Panoramic iDrive operating system.
Production begins at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in August 2026, with the initial combustion-engine variants scheduled for market launch in late November.
Vertical Kidney Grille and Double X Headlights
The X5 introduces an upright front section with a vertically arranged BMW kidney grille featuring Iconic Glow illumination.
New double-X lighting elements combine the daytime running lights, headlights and turn indicators into a single arrangement.
Horizontal air intakes distinguish the combustion-engine models from the fully electric iX5.
At the rear, slim lighting elements repeat the double-X theme, extending across much of the tailgate width. Broad shoulders and a recessed glasshouse contribute to the SUV's stance.
Larger Body and BMW Winglet Door Handles
The X5 40 xDrive measures 4,994 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and 1,751 mm tall, with a 3,035 mm wheelbase.
Its side profile combines angular wheel arches, a gently descending roofline and newly developed BMW Winglet door handles integrated into the pillars.
The recessed handles help maintain uninterrupted door surfaces.
Standard equipment includes 21-inch alloy wheels, while larger 22-inch and 23-inch designs are available.
Panoramic Vision and Redesigned Interior
Inside, the X5 introduces BMW Panoramic Vision, projecting information across the lower section of the windscreen.
A floating Central Display runs BMW Operating System X, accompanied by a redesigned multifunction steering wheel.
An optional passenger screen adds entertainment functionality, while slate and crystal glass decorative surfaces are available.
The cabin also receives standard heated sports seats, ambient lighting and a panoramic glass sunroof.
Rear passenger space benefits from the longer wheelbase, while the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats provide additional flexibility.
400 HP Inline Six With Mild Hybrid Assistance
The X5 40 xDrive uses a 2,998 cc BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-six petrol engine producing 400 hp.
An integrated 48V electric motor contributes up to 18 hp of assistance, with combined drive-system torque reaching 580 Nm.
Power reaches all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive.
The SUV accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reaches an electronically limited 250 km/h.
BMW quotes provisional WLTP fuel consumption of 8.7–9.2 litres per 100 km.
Cargo Capacity and Market Launch
The X5 40 xDrive provides 650 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1,850 litres with the rear seats folded.
Maximum towing capacity is rated at 3,000 kg.
The petrol variant joins a wider X5 range that includes diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and planned hydrogen fuel-cell versions.
