The 2027 BMW 3 Series G50 represents a bigger change than the familiar sedan proportions initially suggest. BMW has moved its core sports sedan into the Neue Klasse design era, while keeping combustion engines alongside the new electric i3. This is the eighth generation of the 3 Series, with the electric and combustion versions sharing a closely related appearance. Petrol models are due to be produced in Dingolfing, while the electric i3 comes from BMW's Munich plant.

Neue Klasse Look Keeps Familiar BMW Proportions

The shape remains recognisably 3 Series. There is a long wheelbase, short overhangs, a set back glasshouse and pronounced rear shoulders, but the surfacing is cleaner than before.

Up front, the kidneys, headlights and sensors are visually grouped together. A horizontal lighting element stretches across much of the nose, interrupted by pairs of vertical daytime running lights. Flush door handles clean up the side view.

The rear follows the same horizontal theme. Three dimensional lamps extend into the shoulders, with two individual elements on either side providing an abstract interpretation of BMW's traditional L shaped lighting.

G50 Is Longer And Wider Than The G20

The combustion engined G50 measures 4,765 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,455 mm high. Its wheelbase is 2,860 mm. That makes it 52 mm longer and 23 mm wider than the previous G20 quoted by BMW, while the wheelbase grows by 9 mm. Track widths have increased as well, helping give the sedan a broader stance. ICE versions start with 18 inch alloy wheels, with sizes up to 20 inches available. M Sport and M Sport Pro packages bring their own bumpers, skirts, diffuser treatments and brake finishes.

Panoramic iDrive Changes The Cabin

The dashboard is a substantial departure from the previous 3 Series. BMW Panoramic Vision projects information across the lower windscreen, removing the need for a conventional instrument display behind the steering wheel. A 17.9 inch Central Display sits angled toward the driver. An optional 3D Head Up Display supplements it, while BMW Operating System X handles the digital interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Electric front seats with memory are standard. A panoramic glass roof, multifunction seats, M Sport seats, rear seat heating and Harman Kardon audio are available depending on specification.

Petrol And Electric Power Share The Range

The BMW 320 uses a 1,998 cc turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid technology. It produces 211 hp and 330 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Above it, the M350 xDrive combines a 3.0 litre inline six with mild hybrid assistance for 443 hp and 580 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The electric side is led initially by the i3 50 xDrive. Its dual motor system produces 469 hp and 645 Nm, with BMW quoting up to 912 km of provisional WLTP range and DC charging at up to 400 kW.

Practicality Stays Familiar

Combustion models provide 450 litres of luggage capacity, while the i3 offers 420 litres at the rear plus a 31 litre front compartment. Every version gets 40:20:40 split folding rear seats. A plug in hybrid is also planned for the following year, giving the new 3 Series one of the broadest powertrain selections in its segment.
