The XC70 returns in China as a long-range plug-in hybrid SUV, offering up to 200 km of electric-only driving per CLTC testing.
It is built on Volvo’s new SMA platform (CMA Evo) with a 1.5L turbo engine paired with dual electric motors and a 3-speed hybrid transmission.
Available in two battery options (21.2 kWh LFP and 39.6 kWh NMC), priced from 460,000 yuan, initially exclusive to the Chinese market.
A Name Reborn as PHEV SUV
Volvo has resurrected one of its best‑known nameplates—the XC70—as a plug-in hybrid SUV designed and built in China. Unveiled in 2025 and now rolling off the assembly lines in Taizhou, this model signals Volvo’s commitment to electrified mobility tailored to Chinese demand. Remaining a PHEV-only offering at launch, it may later appear in other markets pending feasibility.
Design and Chassis: Modern Scandinavian SUV
This new XC70 abandons its wagon roots and aligns stylistically with Volvo’s current EV models—think slim “Thor’s Hammer” DRL signature, closed grille, and sleek EX90-style window line. Tail lamps stretch across the rear glass, with a modern minimalistic look indoors and out. It rides on the Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), a hybrid-optimized derivative of the CMA Evo platform used in Lynk & Co 08.
Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain Details
Under the skin, the XC70 employs a 1.5‑litre turbocharged engine paired with a series-parallel hybrid system featuring dual electric motors (P1 + P3 configuration) and a 3-speed DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission). The SUV supports auto start-stop, regenerative braking, and efficient power distribution between combustion and electric drive.
The model offers two battery options sourced from CATL:
- 21.2 kWh LFP battery: around 100 km electric range (CLTC)
- 39.6 kWh NMC battery: up to 180–200 km electric range (CLTC)
Performance Specs and Charging
Volvo claims the XC70 can achieve 124 miles (200 km) of electric-only range under the generous Chinese CLTC cycle. Combined with fuel, its total driving distance may exceed 1,200 km, depending on conditions.
The model charges quickly: from empty to 80% in approximately 23 minutes on DC fast charge. It also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, enabling users to power appliances or outdoor accessories.
