2026 Toyota Hilux BEV European Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • First Toyota body-on-frame vehicle developed with a battery-electric powertrain.

  • Permanent all-wheel drive uses front and rear eAxles for off-road capability.

  • Retains Hilux practicality with a Double Cab layout, payload, and towing ability.

Electric Power Meets A Familiar Hilux Formula

The 2026 Toyota Hilux BEV European Version marks a significant moment for Toyota’s pickup range. After decades of relying on diesel power, the Hilux now enters the battery-electric era without abandoning the qualities that built its reputation.

Rather than creating an entirely separate product, Toyota has integrated the BEV into the ninth-generation Hilux lineup. The result is a pickup that looks and feels familiar while introducing a completely different powertrain underneath. According to Toyota, the objective was straightforward: build an electric Hilux that still behaves like a Hilux.

Tough x Agile Styling With EV Specific Details

Visually, the Hilux BEV follows the same Tough x Agile design language used across the new generation range. Slim headlights, strong surfacing, and a broad stance give the truck a more modern appearance without moving away from its rugged roots.

There are a few clues that distinguish the electric model. The traditional grille disappears, replaced by a raised geometric panel beneath the TOYOTA emblem. The front wing houses a charging port, while BEV badging appears at the rear.

Toyota also developed specific 17-inch aerodynamic wheels for the electric version. Their directional design was optimized through simulation and wind-tunnel testing to improve efficiency while maintaining the tough character expected from a working pickup.

Familiar Cabin With New Digital Features

Inside, the Double Cab layout remains intact. Toyota says preserving cabin space was a priority during development, and the battery installation avoids intrusion into passenger or cargo areas.

The dashboard mirrors the broader Hilux range, featuring a horizontal design influenced by the latest Land Cruiser. Higher-grade versions receive a 12.3-inch multimedia display alongside a configurable digital combimeter.

Wireless smartphone integration, improved storage solutions, and redesigned seating contribute to a cabin that feels considerably more contemporary than previous Hilux generations. The BEV introduces a dedicated shift-by-wire selector and revised centre console arrangement, but otherwise retains the practical layout found across the lineup.

Dual eAxles Deliver Permanent AWD

The heart of the 2026 Toyota Hilux BEV European Version is a pair of electric eAxles positioned at the front and rear.

The front unit produces 80 kW and 205 Nm, while the rear contributes 128 kW and 268 Nm. Together they provide permanent all-wheel drive and precise torque distribution between the axles.

Energy comes from a 59.2 kWh water-cooled lithium-ion battery mounted within the frame. Toyota claims the truck can travel up to 257 km on the WLTP combined cycle and as much as 380 km in urban driving conditions. Charging from 10 to 80 percent can be completed in around 30 minutes using a 125 kW DC fast charger.

Built For Work Beyond The Pavement

Toyota was determined that electrification would not weaken the Hilux’s off-road credentials.

The BEV retains a 700 mm wading depth, 29-degree approach angle, 24-degree departure angle, and 500 mm wheel articulation. It also becomes the first Toyota battery-electric vehicle equipped with Multi-Terrain Select, allowing drivers to tailor performance for rock, sand, mud, dirt, and mogul surfaces.

Practicality remains important. Payload is rated between 710 and 715 kg depending on grade, while towing capacity reaches 1,600 kg. Those figures place the Hilux BEV firmly in the conversation for businesses looking to reduce emissions without giving up the versatility expected from a pickup truck.
