2026 Toyota GR Corolla 8AT
By Lorenzo Bianchi May 8, 2026
Toyota introduces a new GR Direct Automatic Transmission for the GR Corolla.
Updated model gains improved cooling, revised suspension geometry, and Torsen LSDs.
Turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder still produces 210kW and 400Nm.
Toyota expands the GR Corolla formula
The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla 8AT was probably inevitable.
Ever since the GR Corolla launched with its rally-bred all-wheel-drive system and six-speed manual gearbox, there has been a steady conversation around whether Toyota would eventually offer an automatic version. Now it finally has.
The new eight-speed automatic variant broadens the GR Corolla lineup without changing the car’s underlying personality too much. That matters because the original car built its reputation around rawness, mechanical grip, and a slightly unfiltered edge that many modern hot hatches have slowly lost.
Toyota appears aware of that balancing act.
Exterior revisions are subtle but purposeful
Visually, the 2026 GR Corolla does not move far away from the original formula.
The wide stance, swollen fenders, aggressive vents, and triple-exit exhaust already gave the car enough presence when it first arrived. Toyota instead focused on functional refinements rather than cosmetic reinvention.
The automatic variant receives additional cooling upgrades designed for sustained high-load driving conditions. An air-cooled automatic transmission fluid cooler, added sub-radiator, and revised airflow ducting all work to manage heat more effectively during demanding use.
Toyota even removed the front fog lamps to improve aerodynamic efficiency at the nose.
That sounds minor on paper, though it hints at how seriously Gazoo Racing approached thermal management and airflow tuning here.
The GR Corolla now also gains Torsen limited-slip differentials across the range, along with revised suspension geometry and rebound springs intended to reduce inner-wheel lift during aggressive cornering.
In other words, Toyota kept developing the chassis rather than simply adding an automatic gearbox and calling it finished.
GR Direct Automatic Transmission changes the experience
The biggest story is clearly the new eight-speed automatic.
Toyota calls it the GR Direct Automatic Transmission, or GR D-AT. Unlike conventional torque-converter setups designed mainly for comfort, this transmission was developed with track driving in mind. Toyota says the system can anticipate driver inputs and deliver faster, more responsive shifts under load.
Paddle shifters and sequential shift functionality come standard, while the gearbox also includes oil temperature monitoring and additional diagnostic systems.
The engine itself remains unchanged.
Toyota’s turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder continues to produce 210kW and 400Nm, paired with the brand’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system. Top speed remains listed at 230 km/h.
That engine still feels slightly absurd in the best possible way.
Three cylinders should not sound this aggressive or deliver torque this hard in a hatchback this size, yet the GR Corolla continues to make the formula work.
Interior upgrades focus on usability and driver control
Inside, Toyota made smaller refinements rather than redesigning the cabin entirely.
Chrome trim has been replaced with darker GR gun-metallic finishes around the instrument panel, center console, and shift area. The iMT switch was relocated closer to the shifter to improve accessibility during spirited driving.
Toyota also upgraded the infotainment and safety systems across the range.
Blind-spot monitoring, Safe Exit Assist, active noise control, wireless smartphone integration, adaptive cruise control, and a reverse camera are now included.
The GR Corolla still sits in a relatively small corner of the performance market.
Most manufacturers have either abandoned compact performance cars entirely or softened them into fast daily commuters. Toyota seems determined to keep some rough edges intact. The new 8AT simply makes the car easier to live with for buyers who still want the GR experience without a clutch pedal.
