2026 Toyota bZ4X South African Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Toyota introduces the bZ4X and the larger, more versatile bZ4X Touring to South Africa.

  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive, up to 334 kW, and a maximum estimated range of 487 km headline the electric SUV lineup.

  • A redesigned interior features a 14-inch touchscreen, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and premium standard equipment.

The 2026 Toyota bZ4X South African Version marks an important step in Toyota South Africa's expanding electric vehicle lineup. As the company's first dedicated battery-electric SUV, it joins the local market alongside the new bZ4X Touring, giving buyers two versions built on the same e-TNGA platform but aimed at different lifestyles.

The standard bZ4X is positioned as an everyday electric SUV, while the Touring adds more cargo space, increased ground clearance and a stronger focus on family travel and outdoor use. Both share Toyota's latest battery-electric technology but approach practicality in slightly different ways.

Familiar Toyota Styling With Two Distinct Personalities

Toyota has kept the standard bZ4X clean and understated.

Slim LED headlamps, the brand's Hammerhead front-end design and smooth body surfaces give it a modern appearance without abandoning traditional SUV proportions. A full-width rear light bar completes the exterior, while the Touring introduces a tougher visual identity through a revised front bumper, more pronounced lower body cladding, raised roof rails and a wider-looking stance. The longer body and taller roof also increase luggage space for buyers who regularly travel with extra gear.

Both versions ride on 20-inch alloy wheels featuring resin detailing that adds a distinctive three-dimensional finish.

An Interior Built Around Everyday Use

Inside, Toyota has taken a minimalist approach.

The dashboard centres around a new 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, while a 7-inch digital instrument display sits higher within the driver's field of vision. Wireless smartphone charging, a shift-by-wire selector and a digital interior mirror help reduce clutter, creating a cabin that feels open and practical rather than complicated.

Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery and a panoramic glass roof all come as standard, while the Touring adds additional cargo capacity for longer trips and outdoor activities.

Electric Power Meets Long Distance Capability

The 2026 Toyota bZ4X South African Version uses a 73.11 kWh lithium-ion battery, while the Touring receives a slightly larger 74.69 kWh pack. Estimated driving range is quoted between 456 and 481 km for the standard model and 462 to 487 km for the Touring. DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes under ideal conditions.

Performance differs as well. The standard bZ4X produces 255 kW, reaching 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the Touring develops 334 kW and reduces the sprint to 4.3 seconds. Both models feature dual-motor all-wheel drive, X-Mode terrain management, Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control to improve confidence away from sealed roads.

Positioned As Toyota's Electric SUV Flagship

Toyota equips both versions with Safety Sense 3.0, JBL audio, integrated navigation, Intelligent Park Assist and a comprehensive list of driver assistance features. South African pricing starts at R1,182,800 for the bZ4X and R1,317,700 for the Touring, with both backed by a six-year/90,000 km service plan, a three-year/100,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty.
