2026 Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Chinese Mural Art

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • A one-off Phantom Extended shaped around ancient Dunhuang mural art and a flowing “Silken Spirit” motif.

  • Commissioned by a private client through Rolls-Royce’s Shanghai office, alongside two other unique builds.

  • Every detail — inside and out — blends heritage and modern craftsmanship, with the standard Phantom V12 underneath.

The Client Behind the Canvas

This particular Phantom Extended came together through Rolls-Royce’s Private Office Shanghai. It wasn’t just about ordering a car. It was about commissioning something personal. Something specific. Three vehicles came out of that process — this Phantom, plus a Black Badge Cullinan and a Spectre. All three share a common visual thread that looks far beyond luxury and into heritage.

An Ancient Story Told in Paint and Metal

The vision for the car started with the Dunhuang murals — those deeply layered, centuries-old paintings found in the Mogao Caves along the ancient Silk Road. You’re looking at over a millennium of storytelling, symbolism, and spiritual imagery, all reinterpreted and scaled to fit one of the longest, most serene cars on the planet.

The idea wasn’t to replicate the murals. It was to distill their energy and motion — the way the figures float, the way the colors glow with a kind of silent reverence — into something you can drive and sit inside.

A Surface That Tells Its Own Story

On the outside, the Phantom is painted in Ningye Purple. It’s a bold color, but one that doesn’t scream. It was chosen to mirror the sky just before dusk — the kind you see above the Great Wall when everything quiets down.

Along the body runs a hand-drawn coachline in Grace White. It’s more than just a stripe — it carries the “Silken Spirit” motif, a visual cue developed by designer Shuai Feng. The shape flows in a way that echoes traditional silk artwork, hand-applied to the C-pillar with quiet precision. That detail alone took hours to complete.

Inside the Cabin, Another Layer Unfolds

Step inside, and it’s clear that the storytelling didn’t stop at the doors. The dashboard — a space Rolls-Royce calls “The Gallery” — has been transformed into something that feels closer to a museum piece than automotive decor.

There’s a scene here — delicate, detailed, deeply rooted in Buddhist cosmology. Flying apsaras drift across the surface. Everything from the stitching to the trim color supports the narrative. It’s not flashy. It’s cohesive. Subtle silk-like textures, layered materials, and calm tones complete the space without overpowering it.

One Theme, Many Expressions

That “Silken Spirit” theme we mentioned earlier? It appears again and again — on the exterior, in the gallery, tucked into interior accents. It gives the entire build a rhythm. It connects the moving lines of the Spirit of Ecstasy figure on the hood to the flowing figures on the dash. There’s continuity here, and it doesn’t feel forced.

Underneath, a Familiar Platform

All the artistic touches sit atop the same foundation that defines every Phantom Extended. That means a twin-turbo V12 engine, a stretched wheelbase for maximum legroom, and the kind of sound insulation that turns city noise into a distant whisper. Nothing mechanical was changed for this commission — and frankly, it didn’t need to be.

It’s One of Three

This Phantom doesn’t stand alone. It was commissioned alongside two siblings — a Black Badge Cullinan and a Black Badge Spectre — both featuring interpretations of the same mural-inspired aesthetic. While the shapes of those vehicles differ, the intention stays the same. Together, they form a thematic trio that blends cultural identity with individual expression.

Why It Matters

Rolls-Royce has long positioned itself as a brand of craftsmanship and customization, but this goes further. This isn’t just color and trim. It’s heritage — adapted and interpreted through a distinctly modern lens.

The car speaks to a growing interest among collectors who want their vehicles to reflect something deeper than prestige. For clients in China and beyond, that means using the car as a vessel for storytelling. And that’s exactly what’s happened here.
