2026 NIO ES8
By Lorenzo Bianchi August 22, 2025
NIO pushes the ES8 into full-size luxury SUV territory with a 5,280 mm body and 3,130 mm wheelbase.
A 520 kW dual-motor system delivers 707 hp and 700 Nm, paired with a 100 kWh battery.
Pricing begins at ¥416,800 (~$57,000), or ¥308,800 with Battery-as-a-Service.
First Impressions
The new 2026 NIO ES8 doesn’t tiptoe into its segment. At 5,280 mm long and 2,010 mm wide, it’s noticeably larger than the outgoing model and sits comfortably in full-size SUV territory. The proportions are more confident now—longer stance, stretched wheelbase at 3,130 mm, and a taller roofline that clears 1,800 mm. Seen in press shots, the ES8’s road presence is immediately more commanding.
NIO’s design language hasn’t been reinvented, but it’s been sharpened. The floating roof, slim “Double-Dash” daytime running lights, and full-width SuperRed rear LED bar give the SUV a more upscale face. It feels closer to global rivals like the Tesla Model X or BMW iX, but with a certain Chinese flourish in the lighting details.
Under the Skin
Power is delivered by a familiar twin-motor setup, but the numbers have climbed. The rear motor produces 340 kW, the front adds another 180 kW, for a combined 520 kW (707 hp). Torque is rated at 700 Nm, which should make the nearly three-ton SUV move with more urgency than its size suggests.
Energy comes from a 100 kWh battery pack. NIO quotes a CLTC range of 635 km, though real-world figures will likely sit lower. Still, that’s a solid upgrade compared with previous generations and competitive for the class.
The SUV also debuts a new sensor arrangement: one roof-mounted LiDAR capable of detecting objects up to 500 meters away, plus two wide-angle side LiDARs. These additions underline NIO’s push on assisted driving tech, especially in dense urban markets.
Cabin and Space
Inside, the ES8 makes use of its new footprint with six- and seven-seat layouts. That extended wheelbase translates directly into legroom, particularly in the second row. There’s a panoramic roof to brighten things up, and the cabin materials, at least in images, look more in line with premium European SUVs.
Precise dimensions for cargo space weren’t detailed, but with over 5.2 meters of body to work with, practicality shouldn’t be a concern.
Pricing and Market Play
Presales have already opened in China:
Standard model: From ¥416,800 (~$57,000 USD)
Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option: From ¥308,800 (~$42,200 USD), with the battery cost separated into a subscription.
That entry point undercuts most full-size electric rivals and sharpens NIO’s positioning against imported models. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in late September, following its public debut at NIO Day.
