MINI brings the GP attitude back
The 2026 MINI John Cooper Works GP Inspired Edition does not try to hide what inspired it.
Everything about the car points back to the wild, limited-production MINI John Cooper Works GP launched in 2019. That car became the fastest and most aggressive MINI ever built at the time, with stripped-back styling, widened arches, and an unapologetically loud personality.
This new version tones things down slightly for road use, though the visual connection remains obvious.
MINI will offer just 55 examples of the GP Inspired Edition in Japan, alongside a separate 145-unit MINI Cooper 5-Door S GP Inspired Edition variant. Deliveries are expected to begin from March.
The numbers are small, which honestly suits a MINI like this.
Special editions tend to work best when they stay genuinely limited.
Red accents and GP graphics dominate the exterior
Visually, the GP Inspired Edition leans heavily into the John Cooper Works identity.
Every car comes finished in Legend Grey with Chili Red roof and mirror caps, a familiar combination for recent JCW models. The contrast works particularly well here because the GP graphics and aerodynamic add-ons already make the car visually busy.
There are dedicated side stripes, bonnet graphics, C-pillar decals, and illuminated door sills exclusive to the edition. MINI also fits floating wheel center caps and several JCW aerodynamic accessories including front, side, and rear winglets alongside a larger rear spoiler.
The overall stance looks tighter and more focused than a standard Cooper S.
Eighteen-inch JCW Lap Spoke two-tone wheels help visually fill the arches, while the lowered adaptive suspension gives the car a noticeably more planted appearance.
It still looks unmistakably MINI. Just angrier.
Turbocharged four-cylinder keeps the performance edge
Under the hood, the GP Inspired Edition uses MINI’s familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
In the John Cooper Works GP Inspired Edition, output reaches 170 kW and 380 Nm of torque, delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters.
MINI says the adaptive suspension and JCW chassis tuning were developed to preserve the sharp handling character associated with earlier GP models. The steering setup and brake package also receive JCW-specific calibration.
Performance figures were not included in the release, though based on the existing JCW platform, the car should remain one of the quickest front-wheel-drive MINIs currently available. [Inference]
The five-door GP Inspired Edition takes a slightly different approach.
Its 150 kW version of the same turbocharged engine prioritizes usability while still offering strong mid-range performance and paddle-shifted engagement. MINI positions that model more as a practical hot hatch for daily use rather than a focused enthusiast special.
Interior mixes modern tech with classic JCW cues
Inside, the GP Inspired Edition keeps the familiar MINI layout but adds several upgrades tied specifically to the JCW trim level.
Sport seats, an anthracite headliner, a JCW sports steering wheel, and bespoke interior trim pieces help separate the cabin from a standard Cooper. Harman Kardon audio, powered front seats, and an interior camera also appear on the higher-spec JCW variant.
Advanced driver assistance systems come standard across both versions, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, steering assist, collision mitigation braking, and rear cross-traffic warning.
Still, the character of the car feels rooted more in old-school hot hatch energy than digital luxury.
That’s probably why the GP badge continues to matter to MINI enthusiasts in the first place.
