2026 MG U9 Black Edition

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Australia is the first country to launch the limited-run 2026 MG U9 Black Edition.

  • Exclusive black exterior accents and upgraded interior finishes set it apart from the standard U9.

  • A 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine, 3.5-tonne towing capacity and new Towing Cruise Control headline the mechanical package.

A familiar ute with a fresh personality

The 2026 MG U9 Black Edition doesn't try to reinvent MG's ute. Instead, it gives the existing formula a sharper, more distinctive character.

Australia is the first market in the world to receive the limited-edition model, which arrives less than a year after the U9 made its local debut. According to MG, the new variant was developed after customers showed interest in a ute with a more premium appearance while keeping the same capability that attracted buyers in the first place. Priced from $57,990 drive away, it slots neatly into the current U9 lineup.

Small styling changes make a noticeable difference

The updates are mostly visual, but they give the ute a noticeably different presence.

Black finishes replace the chrome found elsewhere in the range, covering the grille, MG badges, wheel caps and side trim. A stamped tailgate adds another exclusive detail, while the darker exterior is matched by a black headliner and black interior pillars that give the cabin a more cohesive feel.

It's not an over-the-top makeover. Instead, the Black Edition leans into a cleaner, more understated look that still suits a working ute.

Capability hasn't taken a back seat

Underneath those styling changes, the mechanical package remains familiar.

Power comes from MG's 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine, working alongside a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. A three-Lock system is included to improve traction when driving off road or on loose surfaces.

The numbers that matter haven't changed either. The U9 Black Edition is rated to tow 3.5 tonnes, rides on 18-inch all-terrain alloy wheels, and retains a spacious cargo tub suited to both work and recreation. New for this model is Towing Cruise Control, introduced to make towing trailers, caravans and boats feel more relaxed over longer journeys.

Comfort features aim beyond the worksite

Step inside and it's clear MG wants the Black Edition to appeal to drivers who spend plenty of time behind the wheel.

The cabin includes premium materials, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and infotainment technology, while practicality remains a priority. An electric-opening tailgate lowers at the touch of a button, revealing a built-in step that makes climbing into the tray easier. When lowered, the tailgate also doubles as a bench with integrated cup holders—a simple idea that's likely to come in handy on camping trips or weekend outings.

Built around changing buyer expectations

MG believes today's ute buyers expect more than towing and payload figures. Comfort, technology and everyday usability now sit alongside capability on many shopping lists, and the Black Edition reflects that shift. The company also confirmed that an MGU9 EV will join the range in the future, expanding customer choice with an electric alternative.

For now, the 2026 MG U9 Black Edition offers a fresh take on MG's diesel ute. The updates aren't dramatic, but together they create a model with a more distinctive identity while preserving the practicality that sits at the heart of the U9.
