2026 MG U9

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Powertrain and capability: 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine, ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, 4WD, and 3,500 kg braked towing capacity.

  • Comfort and utility upgrades: Independent rear multi-link suspension, Smart Hatch (retractable rear cabin window), power tailgate with fold-down step, fold-flat rear seats.

  • Pricing and variants: Three trims — Explore, Explore X, Explore Pro — priced between A$55,000 and A$65,000, arriving in late 2025.

Powertrain and Performance Specifications

MG has confirmed that the U9 will be powered by a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain includes a four-wheel drive system (Super Select 4WD). This setup delivers 164 kW of power and 520 Nm of torque.

The towing capacity is rated at 3,500 kg (braked), putting the U9 among the stronger performers in its class. Payload figures vary depending on the variant; certification documents show payloads ranging roughly from 820 kg to 1,100 kg, depending on configuration.

Suspension, Drive System, and Out-on-Road Behavior

A key point of differentiation for the U9 is its suspension setup. At the rear, MG uses a multi-link independent suspension instead of the traditional leaf-spring live axle used in many ute rivals. Up front, double-wishbone suspension is employed.

The U9 includes features designed for better ride comfort on road and capability off road. The U9 supports selectable 4WD, which helps in difficult terrain, while its chassis is treated with corrosion protection.

Design, Interior Features and Utility

Trim Levels & Exterior Features:

The U9 will be offered in three trims: Explore, Explore X, and the top-spec Explore Pro.

Key utility-oriented features include a power tailgate with a built-in fold-down step + cupholders, for easier access to the tub.

The “Smart Hatch” feature comes standard on the Explore Pro trim. It includes a retractable rear cabin window and allows the divider between the cabin and tub to fold flat. This creates a pass-through and increases usable load space.

Interior & Comfort:

Seats in higher trims are heated and ventilated front and rear; driver seat gets massage function.

Cabin layout: dual 12.3-inch digital displays for driver and infotainment; gear selector styled with an “aircraft-inspired” design.

Rear seats fold completely flat in some trim levels, enhancing utility and allowing a flat bed-like surface when combined with Smart Hatch.

Exterior dimensions and stance:

The U9 is longer than many comparable utes, sharing platform and basic footprint with LDV Terron 9. Its exact dimensions place it in dual-cab ute range slightly above Ranger in some measures.

Pricing, Trim Levels and Market Position
