2026 MG S9 PHEV

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • MG’s first three-row SUV with seating for seven.

  • Plug-in hybrid system with a 24.7kWh battery and up to 62 miles electric range.

  • Over 1,000 litres of cargo space with the third row folded.

MG Steps Into the Three Row SUV Class

The 2026 MG S9 PHEV introduces something new for the brand: a proper three-row SUV. Until now, MG’s lineup has largely focused on compact crossovers and smaller family vehicles. The S9 moves the company into a bigger space, one shaped by practicality as much as electrification.

At a glance, the S9 carries the proportions expected of a large family SUV. The body sits longer and taller than the MG HS, giving it a stronger road presence and, more importantly, room for the extra row of seats. The shape is upright and straightforward. Nothing exaggerated. The design appears to favour space and usability over styling theatrics.

That approach makes sense. This is a vehicle clearly aimed at families rather than design statements.

Interior Layout Focuses on Flexibility

Step inside and the emphasis becomes obvious. The MG S9 is built around flexibility.

Three rows of seating allow the SUV to carry up to seven passengers. When the rearmost seats are folded away, cargo capacity expands significantly. MG says the luggage area can exceed 1,000 litres in this configuration, leaving room for everything from travel bags to bulky household gear.

Even when all seats are occupied, the rear compartment still offers 332 litres of storage, which should cover everyday duties like groceries or school bags.

The cabin also leans toward comfort. Leather-style upholstery is fitted throughout, while a panoramic sunroof brightens the interior. Heated, ventilated and massaging front seats add another layer of refinement, something not always expected in a family-oriented SUV at this price point.

Tri-zone climate control rounds out the setup, helping keep passengers comfortable across all three rows.

Plug In Hybrid Power Targets Daily Driving

The 2026 MG S9 PHEV uses a plug-in hybrid system already familiar from the MG HS. It combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 24.7kWh battery pack, giving the SUV an electric-only range of up to 62 miles under WLTP testing.

That distance matters. For many drivers it covers the daily routine—school runs, commuting, short trips—without needing the petrol engine at all.

Longer journeys, of course, are handled by the hybrid setup. The petrol engine steps in when needed, extending range without relying on charging infrastructure.

The concept isn’t new, but it remains practical.

Safety Systems and Structural Strength

Safety is another area where MG is clearly trying to compete with more established rivals.

The S9 PHEV has already secured a five-star Euro NCAP rating, supported by a body structure that makes extensive use of high-strength steel.

Driver assistance technology also plays a role. The SUV includes up to 16 advanced driver assistance systems, covering the usual suite of monitoring and support functions intended to make everyday driving less stressful.

For a vehicle designed to carry families, those details matter.

Pricing Positions the S9 as a Value Focused Seven Seater

MG has confirmed that the 2026 MG S9 PHEV will be priced between £34,205 and £36,945 in the UK.

That range places the model among the more affordable seven-seat SUVs currently available, particularly those offering electrified powertrains.

Orders are already open, with the first vehicles expected to arrive in MG showrooms soon.

For MG, the S9 represents more than just another SUV. It’s a step into a new segment—one where space, efficiency and value carry just as much weight as performance.
