A bestseller reimagined
The GLC has long been Mercedes-Benz’s global volume leader. Now, for 2026, the familiar SUV shifts into its fully electric era with the debut of the GLC EQ (X254). Developed from the ground up as an electric-first model, it is the first in an all-new generation of midsize SUVs and marks one of the most important launches in the company’s current product cycle. Mercedes positions it as a direct answer to customer demand: range, comfort, towing ability, and interior quality have all been raised over the outgoing combustion and plug-in hybrid versions
At launch, the GLC 400 4MATIC EQ headlines the range with 360 kW output and a projected range of up to 713 km under WLTP standards. Four additional variants will follow in due course
Exterior design: iconic grille, aerodynamic stance
The new EQ GLC redefines the brand’s design language. The most striking feature is its illuminated grille: a chromed frame surrounding a smoked-glass mesh with 942 light points, optionally animated. This is the first Mercedes to wear the reinterpreted grille, which Mercedes-Benz Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener describes as a new “face of the brand”.
The SUV retains classic GLC proportions, with a dynamic shoulder line, pronounced wheel arches, and available 21-inch wheels. A low drag coefficient of 0.26 underscores its efficiency. At the rear, star-pattern taillights echo the grille’s illuminated theme, adding animations when unlocking or charging
Interior: hyperscreen and vegan-certified materials
Inside, Mercedes has doubled down on digital luxury. The MBUX Hyperscreen, spanning 99.3 cm (39.1 in), is the largest display the brand has fitted to date. Optional, it stretches across the cabin and blends seamlessly into ambient lighting and the panoramic SKY CONTROL roof. Standard models feature the new MBUX Superscreen: three separate displays (10.3-inch instrument, 14-inch central, and 14-inch passenger) under one continuous glass surface.
Space has improved with an 84 mm longer wheelbase. Rear passengers benefit from 47 mm more legroom, while luggage grows to 570 liters in the boot plus 128 liters in the frunk. Fold the rear seats and capacity rises to 1,740 liters.
Mercedes also becomes the first automaker to offer a fully vegan-certified interior, with The Vegan Society verifying its optional materials package. Traditional finishes such as Nappa leather and wood remain available for buyers seeking conventional luxury
Performance and range
At launch, the GLC 400 4MATIC EQ delivers 360 kW (483 hp) via dual-motor all-wheel drive. Its two-speed gearbox at the rear axle optimizes both low-speed towing and high-speed cruising, while battery-to-wheel efficiency reaches 93%. The SUV’s top speed is electronically limited to 210 km/h.
Its 94 kWh lithium-ion battery uses silicon oxide anodes for higher energy density. The 800-volt architecture enables up to 330 kW DC fast charging, translating to 303 km of range replenished in just 10 minutes under WLTP projections. Recuperation of up to 300 kW allows the car to recover energy under braking, effectively delivering “one-pedal” driving in most conditions.
Towing capacity matches that of combustion versions at 2.4 tonnes braked, with a 100 kg drawbar load for e-bikes
Technology: MB.OS and digital intelligence
The GLC EQ debuts MB.OS, Mercedes’ in-house operating system. Described as the car’s “AI-driven superbrain,” it unites infotainment, driver assistance, charging, and comfort into a single architecture capable of 254 trillion operations per second. It learns driver habits, integrates Microsoft and Google AI agents, and enables complex multi-turn conversations with the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant.
Over-the-air updates ensure the system evolves throughout the vehicle’s life, while its chip-to-cloud design safeguards data protection.
Driver assistance, marketed as MB.DRIVE, leverages ten cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. The system delivers cooperative steering, braking, and acceleration support, with visualized “surround navigation” to show what the car perceives. All safety systems come standard and can be expanded post-purchase .
Comfort and chassis
The electric GLC borrows directly from the S-Class playbook, employing AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive damping and optional 4.5-degree rear-axle steering. This reduces the turning circle to 11.2 meters while enhancing high-speed stability
Cabin comfort extends beyond suspension. AGR-certified seating ensures long-haul ergonomics, while ENERGIZING COMFORT programs pair lighting, sounds, and animations into wellness routines. Optional Burmester® 4D surround sound adds tactile bass vibrations into the seats
Charging, sustainability, and lifecycle footprint
Charging convenience is emphasized with MB.CHARGE Public, which includes the option to reserve charging points — a first among automakers. Bidirectional charging allows the GLC to supply power back to a home or grid.
On sustainability, Mercedes claims the GLC EQ achieves a two-thirds lifecycle CO₂ reduction compared to combustion GLC models, thanks to low-carbon aluminum, recycled materials, and net carbon-neutral production at the Bremen plant.
