2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 390 L EQ X540

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Long wheelbase electric GLC tailored for China.

  • Offers five and six seat configurations.

  • Gains AIRMATIC suspension and rear axle steering.

Familiar GLC shape with a quieter evolution

The 2026 Mercedes Benz GLC 390 L EQ X540 doesn’t stray far from what’s already known.

At a glance, it still reads as a GLC. The proportions, the overall silhouette, even the stance feel familiar. But there’s a noticeable stretch through the middle. The long wheelbase shifts the balance slightly, giving it a more relaxed, less compact look.

It’s not a redesign in the dramatic sense. More of an adjustment. The kind that becomes clearer the longer you look at it.

Longer footprint changes how it sits

The numbers tell the real story.

This version measures 4,933 mm in length with a wheelbase of 3,027 mm. That’s 55 mm longer between the axles than the standard model. Width and height stay close to expectations at 1,902 mm and 1,710 mm respectively.

What that extra space does is fairly straightforward. It opens up the second row, and in this case, even allows for a different seating approach. Buyers can opt for two individual rear seats or go further with a six seat layout.

That flexibility hints at how the car is meant to be used. Not just driven, but ridden in.

Cabin experience leans toward comfort and interaction

Mercedes hasn’t laid out every detail of the interior, but some pieces stand out.

The GLC 390 L EQ runs on the MB.OS system, which underpins most of the vehicle’s digital functions. That includes a more advanced virtual assistant, referred to here as “LittleBenz,” designed to handle voice interaction in multiple languages and dialects.

It’s a clear nod to localization. The system isn’t just translated, it’s built with the market in mind. Gesture and voice based interaction seem to play a bigger role here, though exact interface layouts remain [Unverified].

Electric underpinnings with focus on refinement

This is the first fully electric version of the GLC in this format.

While Mercedes hasn’t disclosed detailed performance figures, the emphasis sits elsewhere. Ride quality, stability, and overall refinement appear to take priority. The inclusion of AIRMATIC air suspension and rear axle steering suggests that.

Rear steering allows for tighter maneuvering at low speeds and more stability at higher speeds. It’s the kind of feature that doesn’t always show up in spec sheets as a headline, but makes a difference in daily driving.

Battery capacity and driving range remain [Unverified].

Practical touches shaped around daily use

Some of the smaller details are more telling.

The GLC 390 L EQ includes China specific functions such as integrated toll system compatibility within its navigation assisted driving setup. It’s a small feature, but one that removes friction in everyday driving.

Testing has been extensive as well. The model went through over 230 crash tests globally, with a significant portion conducted in China. Real world testing covered nearly five million kilometers, suggesting a focus on durability rather than just presentation.

Positioned at the center of a broader push

This model isn’t arriving in isolation.

It sits within Mercedes Benz’s wider plan to expand its locally developed portfolio in China. Long wheelbase models, tailored software, and market specific features are becoming standard practice rather than exceptions.

The 2026 Mercedes Benz GLC 390 L EQ X540 fits squarely into that approach. It doesn’t try to stand apart from the GLC lineage. Instead, it adapts it, stretches it slightly, and reshapes it around the expectations of a different audience.

That seems to be the direction here. Subtle changes, but targeted ones.
