The Lexus ES moves into a more futuristic space
The 2026 Lexus ES 300h feels less like a facelift and more like a complete rethink of what the ES is supposed to be.
Unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show, the eighth-generation sedan pushes the long-running Lexus formula into a noticeably different direction. The familiar quietness and comfort remain, but the new car adds a stronger visual identity, more advanced electrification, and a cabin that leans heavily into minimalist technology.
Lexus describes the new design approach as “Clean Tech x Elegance.” Corporate language aside, the ES genuinely looks different from the current model. Lower, smoother, and more sculpted in profile, it almost drifts toward fastback territory without fully abandoning traditional sedan proportions.
A cleaner spindle shape changes the ES identity
The exterior design takes clear inspiration from the LF-ZC concept.
At the front, Lexus reshaped the spindle theme into something flatter and cleaner. Instead of the oversized grille treatment seen on earlier models, the new ES integrates the spindle form directly into the bodywork itself. Hybrid variants like the ES 300h still retain a slim upper grille for cooling purposes, though the overall appearance feels much more restrained.
The new Twin L-Signature lighting also stands out. Thin daytime running lamps angle inward while the turn indicators stretch outward, creating a sharper visual signature without looking overly dramatic.
In profile, the ES adopts a flowing one-motion silhouette with a lower roofline and tightly sculpted body surfaces. Lexus says the body dimensions were carefully balanced around electrified packaging, including underfloor battery accommodation for future EV versions.
Overall length now stretches to 5,140 mm, while the wheelbase grows by 80 mm compared with the outgoing model.
That added size noticeably benefits rear passenger space.
Cabin focuses on calm rather than excess
Inside, Lexus avoided clutter almost completely.
The dashboard sits low and horizontal, helping visibility, while slimmer seats and larger glass areas make the cabin feel more open than before. The new panoramic roof adds adjustable dimming functionality, allowing passengers to darken or brighten the glass instantly.
Lexus introduces what it calls Responsive Hidden Switches, where touch-sensitive controls remain visually hidden until a hand approaches them. It sounds experimental, though the company says the controls still provide physical tactile feedback to avoid accidental presses.
Rear passengers get a surprisingly lounge-like setup as well, including reclining seats, ottomans, and relaxation functions using air bladders built into the seats.
The overall atmosphere feels more high-end hotel suite than sports sedan.
Hybrid performance stays central to the lineup
The ES 300h remains an important part of the lineup despite Lexus expanding its EV range.
For 2026, the hybrid model adopts a revised 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid system in certain markets, while updated 2.5-liter hybrid variants also continue. Lexus says the hybrid setup benefits from a more compact eAxle and higher battery output, helping improve both refinement and efficiency.
A redesigned TNGA GA-K platform increases rigidity, while a new multi-link rear suspension appears for the first time on an ES. Dynamic Rear Steering is also available, improving low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability.
The result sounds less isolated than older ES generations.
And honestly, that was probably necessary. Buyers in this segment increasingly expect comfort without sacrificing driver engagement entirely.
