2026 Leap Motor Lafa 5
By Lorenzo Bianchi September 9, 2025
Leapmotor’s Lafa 5 is a compact EV hatch positioned against the VW ID.3, MG4, and BYD Dolphin.
Two configurations: 132 kW with a 56.2 kWh battery or 160 kW with a 67.1 kWh pack, delivering 361–434 km WLTP range.
European production starts in Zaragoza in late 2026, under Stellantis’ global expansion partnership.
First Look: A Compact EV with Clear Intent
Leapmotor chose Munich’s IAA Mobility 2025 to pull the wraps off its newest model, the 2026 Lafa 5. It’s a compact hatchback, roughly ID.3-sized, with the sort of proportions Europeans already know well. But the details give it its own stamp—joined LED head and tail lamps, sharp fender lines, and a slightly sloped roof that makes it look taut without drifting into coupe territory. A neat spoiler ties off the rear, underscoring the car’s sporty stance.
For a brand still establishing itself outside China, the styling matters. The Lafa 5 looks familiar enough to blend in but has enough edge to make buyers stop for a second look.
Powertrain and Range Options
Two versions will be offered at launch. The base model uses a 132 kW (177 hp) motor and a 56.2 kWh LFP battery, good for a WLTP-rated 361 km. The higher-spec version boosts output to 160 kW (215 hp) with a 67.1 kWh pack, stretching range to 434 km.
Both support 11 kW AC charging for home use and 168 kW DC fast charging when plugged into the right infrastructure. It’s not headline-grabbing tech, but it’s practical and competitive in a segment where efficiency and convenience carry more weight than raw speed.
Size, Platform, and Build
The Lafa 5 rides on Leapmotor’s LEAP 3.5 modular platform, also underpinning the B10 crossover. Dimensions are in the ballpark of rivals: 4,430 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,520 mm tall, riding on a 2,735 mm wheelbase.
That makes it slightly longer than the ID.3, with a bit more width for stance. Inside, Leapmotor says the car will deliver the space efficiency compact EV buyers expect, though interior shots suggest it’s also leaning into a clean, screen-driven cabin design.
Built in Spain, Marketed to the World
Perhaps the most telling detail is where it will be built. From Q3 2026, production of the Lafa 5 will start in Zaragoza, Spain—a clear sign Leapmotor is serious about competing on European turf. With Stellantis holding a 20% stake in the company, the infrastructure and distribution pathways are there to support a meaningful rollout.
The car will debut in China first, with deliveries starting late 2025, but Europe is clearly the long game
