2026 Leap Motor C16 LiDar Edition
By Lorenzo Bianchi September 16, 2025
LiDar-based driver assistance system gives the C16 its flagship edge in Leapmotor’s SUV lineup.
Offers single- and dual-motor configurations with an estimated 600 km CLTC driving range.
Competitive pricing expected between CNY 250,000–300,000, placing it against rivals like Li Auto L7 and XPeng G9.
Leapmotor hasn’t tried to over-style the C16 LiDar Edition. It takes the clean, almost understated lines of the standard C16 and overlays them with discreet technology cues. The most visible change is the roof-mounted LiDar unit, perched up front for maximum visibility. Slim LED lamps frame the nose, while a full-width light bar stretches across the rear, reinforcing its modern identity.
At just under 4.9 meters long and sitting on a wheelbase close to 2.9 meters, the C16 keeps the proportions of a family-focused midsize SUV. It feels wide, stable, and clearly designed with everyday usability in mind rather than showroom theatrics.
Cabin and Comfort
Step inside, and the approach is consistent with Leapmotor’s recent design language — simple surfaces, big screens, and a lot of emphasis on tech. A central high-resolution display dominates the dashboard, backed by a digital cluster for the driver and a head-up display projected onto the windshield.
Materials lean toward the premium side, with soft-touch panels and stitched finishes, while panoramic glass adds an airy dimension to the cabin. Buyers can choose between five- and six-seat layouts, with the latter offering captain’s chairs in the second row. Families will appreciate the practical touches — wireless charging pads, USB-C outlets scattered throughout, and thoughtful storage solutions.
Powertrain and Range
The C16 LiDar Edition is built on Leapmotor’s latest EV platform and comes in both single-motor rear-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive setups. The AWD version pushes out close to 400 horsepower (about 300 kW), which should be more than enough for brisk overtakes and steady high-speed cruising.
Battery capacity is expected to clear the 90 kWh mark, and official estimates put range at more than 600 km under the CLTC cycle. Fast charging is part of the package too, with the ability to recover from 30 to 80 percent in roughly half an hour when plugged into a high-speed DC charger.
LiDar and Driver Assistance
Where the LiDar Edition earns its name is in its sensor suite. The roof-mounted LiDar unit works alongside radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to map the environment in fine detail. The payoff is more accurate lane guidance, smoother adaptive cruise control, and improved obstacle recognition in dense traffic or urban driving.
Leapmotor makes it clear that the C16 LiDar Edition is designed with higher-level autonomous driving in mind. It’s not all activated today, but the hardware is ready for software upgrades as regulations catch up.
SUVs live or die on practicality, and the C16 checks off the usual boxes. In five-seat mode, cargo space easily clears 500 liters, and the six-seat layout still leaves respectable room for bags or gear. Split-folding seats expand the load bay when needed, and the flat floor makes it simple to pack larger items.
Towing isn’t a headline feature here, though the underlying platform is capable of moderate trailering. For most buyers, it’s the day-to-day flexibility and cabin usability that matter more.
Leapmotor is pitching the C16 LiDar Edition directly into one of the most competitive corners of the EV market — the midsize intelligent SUV segment. That means rivals like the Li Auto L7, XPeng G9, and NIO ES6 are firmly in its sights.
With expected pricing between CNY 250,000 and 300,000 (roughly USD 34,000–41,000), the C16 aims to bring LiDar capability to a broader audience. It’s a positioning play: offer tech usually reserved for pricier EVs, but at a figure that keeps it within reach of a larger slice of buyers.
