An Assured Development in Hydrogen Transport
For fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), the 2026 Hyundai Nexo represents a turning point.Revealed in Seoul ahead of its global rollout, Hyundai’s next-generation hydrogen SUV delivers both technical sophistication and a visual statement of intent. It’s no longer a science experiment in motion — it’s a fully realized production car designed to bridge hydrogen propulsion with daily usability.
The new model develops 190 kW from its revised powertrain — a combination of an 80 kW high-voltage battery and an upgraded fuel-cell stack rated at 110 kW gross. That power feeds a 150 kW motor driving the front wheels, trimming the 0–100 km/h run to 7.8 seconds. More significantly, Hyundai claims a WLTP range of 826 km from a five-minute refill, underscoring hydrogen’s potential to rival battery EVs in long-haul capability.
Refinement Through Engineering
Hyundai’s engineers have doubled down on refinement. Improved fuel-cell efficiency, optimized hydrogen storage (now 6.69 kg), and a denser tank structure contribute to both performance and durability in extreme conditions. The system’s “Wake Up” anti-freezing feature ensures cold-weather reliability — a nod to lessons learned from early adopters in colder markets.
The ride experience benefits from new technologies like e-Handling and a Smart Regenerative System that anticipates braking zones using navigation data. Together, they give the Nexo sharper dynamics without compromising the serenity expected of an electrified SUV. Active Noise Control and sound-absorbing tires refine the cabin’s hush, while European models now gain towing capability up to 1,000 kg — a first for an FCEV in this class.
Inside the ‘Art of Steel’
Visually, the 2026 Nexo presents Hyundai’s new “Art of Steel” design language. The surfaces feel taut and architectural, with an emphasis on material honesty rather than decorative flair. Horizontal grooves along the doors emphasize width and strength, while the signature HTWO lamps — a nod to the hydrogen brand — define its identity both day and night.
Inside, the cabin adopts a dual 12.3-inch curved display setup under Hyundai’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit interface. There’s voice recognition powered by generative AI, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, and over-the-air updates. Materials lean toward sustainability: bio-leather, recycled PET fabrics, and bio-based plastics feature throughout the interior.
Space has grown, too. Rear cargo capacity reaches 993 liters, and first-row Premium Relaxation Seats echo those in the Ioniq 6 — reclinable, padded, and designed for long-haul comfort.
Safety and Technology Integration
Hyundai expects top safety scores across all regions, supported by a rigid multi-skeleton frame and up to nine airbags. The Nexo’s comprehensive ADAS suite includes Highway Driving Assist 2, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance, and Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 — among others — making it one of the most technologically equipped hydrogen SUVs to date.
Digital mirrors, an advanced dash cam, and biometric authentication through fingerprint login bring a sense of futuristic convenience without overcomplication. It illustrates Hyundai's approach to making advanced hydrogen technology accessible, reliable, and enticing.
