Exterior Design and Proportions
The 2026 Geely Starray EM-i presents itself with a clean, deliberate design that prioritises efficiency without sacrificing presence. Its proportions place it firmly in the mid-size SUV category, but the detailing is precise rather than bulky. The front end is defined by a layered LED headlight arrangement, using 264 individual light beads and delivering illumination up to 184 metres. The surfaces are smooth and controlled, with sculpting that feeds directly into aerodynamic efficiency rather than visual excess.
Geely quotes a drag coefficient of 0.288 Cd, an unusually low figure for a vehicle of this size, and the bodywork reflects that focus. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar stretches across the tailgate, integrating 368 LED elements over a 2240 mm span. It is a strong visual signature and gives the Starray EM-i a wide, grounded stance on the road.
Plug-In Hybrid System and Driving Character
At the core of the Starray EM-i is Geely’s EM-i (E-Motive Intelligence) system, making its first global market appearance. The setup pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an 11-in-1 electric drive unit incorporating two electric motors. Total electric output is rated at 160 kW and 262 Nm, driving the front wheels exclusively.
Energy is stored in an 18.4 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery, enabling up to 83 km of electric-only driving on the WLTP cycle. For longer journeys, the hybrid system extends total driving range to a quoted 943 km. The system supports three selectable drive modes—Pure, Hybrid, and Power—allowing the driver to prioritise electric operation, efficiency, or combined performance depending on conditions.
Charging flexibility is notable. The battery supports AC charging at up to 6.6 kW and DC fast charging at up to 30 kW, with a 30–80 percent charge achievable in around 20 minutes. Vehicle-to-load functionality is also included, offering up to 6 kW of external power output.
Interior Layout and Technology
Inside, the Starray EM-i adopts a technology-forward layout anchored by what Geely describes as a “Golden Triangle” of screens. A 15.4-inch central touchscreen running the Flyme operating system is joined by a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, while higher-spec Inspire models add a 13.8-inch head-up display.
Material quality and packaging are clearly aimed at everyday usability. Over 30 storage areas are spread throughout the cabin, while rear-seat passengers benefit from a ceiling height of 1200 mm and long seat cushions designed for comfort on longer journeys.
Market Positioning and Ownership Focus
Priced from $37,490 to $39,990 before on-road costs, the Starray EM-i undercuts many established hybrid SUV rivals while offering plug-in capability as standard. Backed by a seven-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty, it positions itself as a low-risk entry point into electrified ownership for Australian buyers.
